"Bags, you fool! Quit counting like a halfling and take off that hat. We're in the dock ward and a fop like you is just begging to be run through."

I saw a thread a while back that mentioned the use of colorful in-game language as a way to enhance roleplay, but there were very few examples. I'm looking for some fun phrases to use in game. We are playing in Forgotten Realms (Sword Coast probably), so some Realms specific things are great, but generic stuff is good too.

I'd really like some new word substitutions (noon=high sun, mug=tankard), exclaimations, curses, and phrases. Non D&D books are a great source. The Dark Tower series was full of great colorful language.

"Counting like a halfling" comes from pg 76 of FRCS. Most people count starting with thumb as 1 and the little finger as 5. Halflings are known for starting with the little finger as 1 and the thumb as 5. "Counting like a halfling" has come to mean someone is being different just to be difficult.

Blood and bloody ashes, you light-blinded fool; get your flamin' head down before they see you! Mother's milk in a cup - one of these days, you're gonna get that taken off at the shoulders if you can't stay down! Kiss a goat on Mother's Day if I'm not right!!

All of the preceding text was put together from various "vulgarities" from the Wheel of Time series. Robert Jordan has a way of turning common words into phrases that just work out as poetic cussing.

When I was younger I read this book
where magic was forbidden & "Magic!"
was considred a cussword.
People were always going around saying
things like "Oh,magic, I've done so-and-so!"
or "Magicking _____!"
So if your character is opposed to magic....

In my campaign it is customary for warriors to greet eachother referring to their weapons. For instance.
"My rapier bids you welcome." or "My sword sings your prases." you could even make it into a threat by saying something like "All that I wish to say to you I shall say with my spear."

"By the flayed flesh of the Mockery." an Eberron specific phrase (the Mockery is a deity in Eberron) but one that can be adapted by substituting in any slaughter/carnage deity. Used to express awe at extreme carnage/evil etc.

"Confusion to your enemies." a popular farewell phrase used by the elves of Valenar (again could be adapted to any warrior society).

"A giants reach." refferrence to any distance of approximately 10 feet.

"Godsblood" slang, used to refer to something that is hypocritical or contradicting in nature. Comes from a belief that the deities are immortal and thus cannot "bleed."

A few derived from CJ Cherryh books....
"Gods Rot! Why'd you do a fool thing like that?" or "Gods be [rotted]!"

"You gods be rotted fool, look where you're going!" (sometimes shortened to "You gods be fool!")

"Egg sucking old woman!" (quite an insult to meat-eating types, implying they're too toothless and old).

"Baji-naji" (literally, fortune and chance; used in six-of-one-half-dozen-of-the-other situations... "But baji-naji, the chips will fall where they may.")

A pick-pocket may be referred to as a 'cut-purse'. "Ilmatar's wounds!" is about the equivalent of "Oh my God!" in some books I've read from the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Hmm... Along the Swords Coast, you'd probably get a lot of sailor slang. "Kelp enwalled" means something to the effect of isolating someone to prevent them causing trouble. It refers to the practice of isolating particularly troublesome crabs in kelp nets to transport them back to harbor.

Thanks for continuing the thread. I haven't read much fantasy lately and I'm drawing a blank on the language that used to come so naturally.

I see somebody's got Arcana Evolved.

I loved that part of the book, BTW.

Best way to insult a Dwarf: Tell him/her that their mother was a beardless, pointy-eared, tree-climbing ninny. :D

My favorite is to emulate the French Knights from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

"I fffart in your general direction! Your Mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! Go away! I don' wanna talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal-food-trough-wiper! Go and boil your bottom, sons of a silly person! I blow my nose at you! Now, go away, or I will taunt you a second time!"
