| thegentlemanclonetrooper11-20-03, 07:07 PM | I have the idea to create a combat medic type of character.Medic is a common term now; it is not a word you associate with the medevil time period that most D&D are set in.The chracter is a fighter,I hate playing clerics, and will take the heal skill even though it will be cross class.I am looking for a name she can call herself.I thought Combat Healer or Sword of Mercy. She is an elf. I am not looking for a prestige class or anything to do with game mechanics. This is a roleplaying thing. I want a character who kicks evil's butt during the battle and patches people up during it.She will be Lawful good.I know this concept would be easier with a cleric character,I could just be a priest of Pelor or another merciful deity, but I hate the spell using classes. I would thankyou for any advice.Once I get the character posted I will let you know how she turns out by posting her. GCT A clone....and A Gentleman. |

| The_Yellow_Dart_Swinger11-20-03, 10:02 PM | Why not play a paladin? You'd have a BAB 20 fighter with some minor healing abilities and some clerical spells without being a cleric. Plus your already the alignment and you can talk to your DM into letting you getting your powers from the idea of doing good rather from a god. But if you really really want to be a pure fighter with a heal ability, let me tell you if there is a cleric or a healer in the party your skill is probably going to become worthless. Heal can do the following things (As stated in the PHB): Stablize a person Long-Term Care (2x hp+ability recovery per day of full rest) Treat Caltop Wounds/Spikes Treat poision and disease (Non- Magical and your check becomes the persons saving throw) So no actul healing of the HP or magical disease, plus you have to have the right equipment for all of it. (Bandages, tools, etc) Which im sure you can just call a "Med-Kit" and have to restock it everyonce in awhile if you use it frequently. Also you might want to carry some potions of cure wound's of various levels or at least light ones, for healing HP. Now for a name, I wouldn't go with the sword of mercy because that sounds like your character acts merciful towards all beings which she may or may not (If she does then I prefer that) But i'd probably exclude the word "Healer" from any title because unless you spend some days with a person or give them potions, your not really healing them. |

Some degree of fighting skills and access to healing spells without the baggage of having a faith. Since you also have a life outside of battles, I would assume that you also do the healing thing outside of battles. The general person who used to do the doctoring in those days also would cut hair, shave beards, perform bloodletting, and all other stuff. He was known as a barbersurgeon. Eventually the bloodletting and surgery was dropped and they are known as barbers today, or rather "unisex hair stylists who can also cut hair." |

Perhaps she heals and comforts the sick with her songs (I am not talking about her spellcasting abilities, here, rather a general attitude) and her beautiful soothing voice. Her calm, kind attitude brings smiles to the maimed in the make-shift hospital tended mostly by exhausted clerics. Charismatic and generous, her help would also be highly-appreciated by the clerics, who are often too obtuse and focused on their doctrines to simply take time to listen to the ill. She takes care of the human side, but her spells can also help when need to. Man, this sounds like Patch Adams. Without the clown attire. And much sexier, no doubt. Besides, you need something with a minimum of mobility: game-wise, a fighter dressed up in clanky armour couldn't fill the bill. A bard, wearing light armour can still cast spells, and that armour wouldn't impair his movement. Roleplaying-wise, the same: your character needs to be fleet of foot to tend to the needs of the wounded on the battlefield, running from one fallen to the next (i am assuming a large-scale battle, with lots of wounded, not a desastrous campaign where all the heroes fall one after the other). Oh, and you wouldn't have to learn all those healing spells in advance, too. A little versatility might save your life one day. If you have access to the Faiths and Pantheons FR book, I suggest giving a look at the picture of the Heart Warder. It's exactly what I have in mind. (It might also be a viable PrC, should you elect to pick one someday, although I haven't checked the requirements). As for giving her a title/name, Bringer of Serenity/Solace or some such moniker might catch your fancy. |
| thegentlemanclonetrooper11-22-03, 01:55 PM | I think I will go with the bard.I can see her traveling from hospital to hospital, village to village healing the sick and injured plus bringing them solace with her music.I think I am going to name her Solace.I will probally take a level of Cleric just to get the healing spells like cure light wounds. Also I am going to give her the Improved Unarmed Strike Feat and arm her with a sap.I see her as someone who would deal nonlethal damage to defend herself but would not kill except in the most dire circumstances. I am changing her to a hal-orc.Her mom fell in love with a CG Orcish Goat Horde. When her mom got preganant with her Solace's grandpa killed her dad and locked her mother in the cellar.Although he called for a healer to deliver Solace mom and baby spent nine years in the cellar until an adventuring party stopped by the house asking to use the barn to shelter for the knight.Grandpa agreed, though he charged them through the nose. The group's Half elf bard and halfling cleric of Yondalla heard Solace singing a song her mother taught her. They investigated and freed Solace and her mom,Testla. The two heroes paid for the two to start things anew.Solace swore that she would dedicate her life to eliminating suffering and cruelty, both with the healing skill the Cleric of Yondalla taught her and the singing skill taught her by the bard. Sorry if i rambled but your suggestions got my creative juices going. Gentleman Clonetrooper |
| Ranthanas11-22-03, 07:14 PM | Just a couple of addenda about the bard. Firstly a bard can move much more freely than the cleric and secondly, even if the bard can't reach the person in trouble, Inspire Courage can be thrown to someone in trouble from anywhere within earshot. Next, grab a wand of curing wounds. You'll probably need it. Should be fun. |
| thegentlemanclonetrooper12-04-03, 09:39 PM | I created my combat medic in the d20 Star Wars game. She is Kist-Na.A Cerean Tech Specialist. She understands the need to fight against injustice but prefers to heal those who fight the battle instead of fighting it herself. She only uses her hold out blaster when absolutely nessecary. I also gave her computer skills. She understands healing and the machines that make it easier. She is a Missionary of the Maker. GCT |
