Comedy in a Campaign? [Archive] - Wizards Community

How do you feel about injecting humor into a campaign?
I have a character who calls himself "the Black Mage of the North"--however, he does not live in the North, instead inhabiting a small village just south of Furyondy. He figured that "The Black Mage of a Small Village Just South of Furyondy" didn't sound imposing enough--and besides, everyone lives north of somewhere, don't they?
His reign of naughtiness would have ended long ago if anyone payed him any attention--fortunately for him, his magical incompetence is matched only by Fizban, so no real adventurers take him very seriously. This is further compounded by the fact that he uses all his high-level spell slots to kill any small animals who wander into his field of vision.
His current mission? Hunting down and killing everyone who knows that his real name is Herman.

Hiho,

A little comedy is alright, but its best not to go too far. As long as you stay with the realm of reality [thats reality relative to the setting, mind you] then thats fine. There should be some reason why this character is as bizzare as he is. If he's just weird for the sake of being weird, it skews the whole world in which the characters live.

You should have seen my funniest character ever--he was an Awakened weasel who contracted rabies and eventually became a ninja. Yes, that's right, one of my characters was a Rabid Ninja Weasel.

Hiho,

Did you, by any chance, play a talking pig named Chris P. Bacon?

No, most of my characters were pretty serious. Those two are the only really funny characters--unless you count the innate hilarity of a Krynnish tinker gnome, that is! (His name: Jonablealdonifertamimusadahoobersankista nkislargleboofenatoraldicarnaldlealdensc olboondos.)

gnomes have LOTS of names... everybody they know, practically, gives them a different name.. and they pick up names for things they do, mannerisms, being in the right place at the wrong time, .. anything, really...

and when they tell a human-type their name (since humans can't deal with your 20 thousand names), they generally just use the one that is, quote, "the most fun to say".

My personal example: I had a gnomish cleric/barbarian whose name was "Flimdoodle". :) I called him "Flimdoodle the Feared", because he's a crazy-buffed up barbarian who worships Kord with a crazy glint in his eye.. I kind of modeled him off of "Stitch", from the movie "Lilo & Stitch". he was only a 3rd level convention character, but he was still fun to play. =)

That's for normal gnomes--Krynnish tinker gnomes have ridiculously long names. A tinker gnome's name is actually a record--in the gnomish language, of course--of everything he and his ancestors have ever done, and an average gnome's name takes up several miles' worth of parchment.
