I am doing a radiant servant of pelor - a good guy, turns undead and whatnot. He's adventuring because his order is a peripatetic one (simple!). That is, his particular order of the church is specifically clerics who wander about doing good (healing, destroying undead), reporting back to whever temple is nearest when they can.

This guy is going to be particularly strongly devoted to Pelor, so I am going to make him an evangelist type. I come from a fundamentalist christian background, so it will be fun to play. Tell me, have you ever considered letting the light of Pelor into your life? But wait! We have not said grace yet! Be healed! In the name of Pelor, be healed!.

I was reading the PH. Pelor is mainly a human deity (humans spend a lot of time in the fields). So I might make this guy a racist - or rather, a speciesist. It creates a convlict. He is a really good guy, basically, but has a head full of sh*t about the "mongrel races" (eg: orcs are a result of human farmwives who slept with their pigs while the husband was away), and some real issues concerning half-breeds (elf girls are easy - that's why you never meet a half-dwarf). Traveling with an adventuring party will probably be the first time he has dealt with an elf, a gnome, or a half-orc on a day-to-day basis.

Shoud be fun, and I don't intend telling the other players straight up what this character is all about. I'm hoping I can play well enough that it emerges.

A fascist priest of Pelor! Very interresting concept! However, that doesn't really fit the concept of a priest from a wandering order. You know, I really doubt that missionaries are told stupidities about native cultures. Perhaps if you were to preach for human nobles but ended in a "lower order," because your wealthy father just made bankruptcy? This way, the young priest who was going to preach for pure-blood humans is now going to preach to poors, travelers and half-breeds. You could be a spoiled child who continually complain about dust on the road, mosquitoes, etc.

make him afraid of the dark too, I am actually playing a Radiant Servant right now who ended up joining the church after vampires turned his parents. So as soon as we reached fifthe level he went there and actually managed to get of his one empowered turning... also don't ever forget that if you operate out of one city you can use the traditional first bank of Pelor scheme, that is, leave your money at the church.

You could be Chaotic Good in place of Neutral Good

Naah - you gave to be NG to be a radiant servant of pelor. Here's what I sent the DM. Oh ... he screwed up the point-buy rules, but I'm not complaining :D

+ + + + + + + ++ ++ +++

Brother Oriel (from the hebrew: "light of god")

Cleric 1 (Deity: Pelor; Domains: Sun, Healing)
Human, NG, Pelor
Size: M, Age: 24, Gender: M, Height: 5'4", Wt: 130 lb

Str: 8 (0 pts)
Dex: 10 (2 pts)
Con: 10 (2 pts)
Int: 10 (2 pts)
Wis: 17 (11 pts)
Cha: 17 (11 pts)

Background:

"I am merciful, as Pelor is merciful, and shines his light on all.
I am constant, as Pelor is constant, and neglects not his duty for a single day.
I shrink not before evil, as Pelor shrinks not to light every darkness, and overpower it with his glory."
At dawn, at midday, and at dusk we will praise him, and forget not his benefits to usward."

"Be healed! In the NAME OF PELOR, be Healed!"
"Tell me brother: have you ever considered letting the light of Pelor into your heart?"

Brother Oriel (not his original name) was always a smallish lad but immensely strong-willed. He had few close friends despite his Cha, as people found him a bit intense. This is because he is gay, although he does not know this. (all he knows is that he found sex to be a bit disappointing and overrated).

All in all, an ideal candidate for the priesthood.

Although of average intelligence, he enjoyed his studies and is very devoted to his God. His main motivation is to "shed abroad the light of Pelor". After all, what good is a candle if it is hidden under a bushel? For this reason, even though he is young and not a full priest yet, he has joined a peripatetic order, whose job is basically to wander about the countryside doing good and to report back as frequently as possible. Although it's a bit unusual for one so young to be doing this, his superiors recognise that he is a bit of an unusual case and have him on a long leash. At this point, he does not necessarily regard the party's goals as his own.

To Oriel, "Good" means that people should be healthy and happy, and engaged in productive, honest labour. And preferably, worshipping Pelor. He sees no reason whatever to compromise with evil. If the law says otherwise, then so much the worse for the law. He does not know it yet, but his first encounter with the undead will clarify for him his life's work.

Oh: and he does have one quirk. Apart from being gay. Pelor is very much a deity of the humans, of the farms and fields. Oriel has rarely met a demihuman or dealt with one. And neither have a lot of the people he has lived with. Consequently, he has a head full of nonsense about the lesser races. Don't get me wrong: he's a genuinely good guy, but he has no reason not to believe that elves are uncivilised, dwarves are thick, halflings are children, gnomes are impractical, half-orcs are mere beasts, and that they all need the guiding hand of Humanity, their natural leaders and masters. We'll see how this plays out, if I can do it without being obvious.

Not a fan of history, eh? That's pretty much what happened 99% of the time--all the missionaries needed to know was that they had the "truth" and whatever the natives thought was wrong.

For instance: consider what most christians believe about people who pay D&D.

Exactly. The fact that you need to make that point says something
