Howdy all. This is my first time on the CD board, so please forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong place.

I'm looking for help in converting a AD&D 2nd Ed. character to 3.5. He was an Ascetic from one of the old god/religion type handbooks (Fiaths and Pantheons???) Ascetic was a character class that gave Cleric Thac0 and hit die, but progressed casting as a wizard, though you only had acess to two schools. I picked Illusion and Alteration.

Previous to the campaign, this character got himself beheaded and trapped in a sword. He started play as the big dumb fighter's magic-talking-spellcasting sword, who was much smarter than the fighter was. (This made for some good RP moments.) Eventually the sword made a deal for a body, but got tricked and ended up as a dog. Then he got greedy and lost his spellcasting (and, thus, speaking) ability. His only choice was to develop his "doggie" abilities like Scent, Moving Silently, Hiding, and penetrating illusions. Towards the end of the campaign he regained spellcasting.

Basically he was the party's scout and secondary caster. How would I mimic this in 3.5? I'll probably work out some sort of deal with the DM for an ECL 0 or 1 dog form (awakened animals are just too expensive). To mimic spellcasting and scouting/sneaking I was thinking: Rogue 3/Sorcerer 6/Arcane Trickster 10. But that would leave me with only one level left over to work on illusion penetration. And Lucky (the dog) was not really a combatant. I can't picture him casting ranged touch spells or rays to get sneak attack damage.

Any ideas on how to recreate this character in 3.5? Thanks much. :)

Bard.

Edit: This really belongs on the Classes board.
