I'd like a little help with this characters flavor. I'd also like advice on where folks think I should change around equipment/spells/feats etc. to keep in context with the characters background.

We are playing with the core rule books only. 3.0 and 3.5 mix...

Grath
5th level sorcerer
5500gp starting money
s15 i12 w12 d12 c14 ch17 (18 with headband of charisma)

Feats
Spell penetration
Lightning reflexes
????

Skills
Spellcraft (8), Knowledge Arcana (8), Concentration(6), Sense Motive(4), Bluff(8), Profession Merchant (2)

Familiar: Viper (+3 on bluff)

My bluff is very high, 15 with charisma and viper added in.

spells: 1st - MagMis, CharmPers, Grease, MageArm, AltSelf,Invis

magic items (5500gp to spend)
headband of charisma +1 (2k)
Ring protection +1 (2k)
Wand of ColorSpray (750)

I like the idea of having him play an outgoing, fast talking type of person who uses his bluffing skills to get him through the day. I'm thinking there should be a better profession for him than a merchant, but I've got writers block.

I put cross class points into sense motive sense I don't like the idea of him being bluffed by another charlatan :)

I would like some thoughts on my free feat, and possibly gear that would be more in character.

Thank you!

Personally, I think a merchant is a fine idea for a sorceror with as many ranks in Know-Arcana as you have. And the bluff and sense motive is a fine power play for such a concept. So if you're looking for a third feat to choose, there is a new one in 3.5 called Persuasive, which gives a +2 bonus on all bluff and intimidate checks. (I also remember one from Forgotten Realms called Silver Tongue; it gives the bonus to bluff and diplomacy. There is another that I forget the name and source for, but it gives the bonus to bluff and sense motive.) There is also Negotiator that gives the bonus to sense motive to diplomacy and sense motive, but that might not be entirely your flavor.

I see, so work the Knowledge Arcana into being a merchant in things Arcane. That works... an inate curiousity dealing with odd curio that I would come across only if I adventured. Gives me motivation for leaving the confines of my shop.

Any suggestions on feats I should take as a sorceror?

Switch Spell Penetration with Spell Focus (Evocation) or Spell Focus (Enchantment). Lightning Reflexes isn't the best choice, but can't hurt much either. Looks good for the rest....:)

For a merchant, the feats I've already suggested (Persuasive, Skill Focus, etc.) are still the ones I suggest. If, on the other hand, you're going to go the more "sorcerous" route then it largely depends on the type of sorceror you are (i.e. what spells you cast, and where or when you cast them.) So unless you are casting alot of spells that need to break spell resistance, Spell Penetration isn't the best choice. Spell Focus is a good alternative, if you are focusing in a particular school (like Evocation or Illusion.)

I prefer to choose feats that will enhance my survivability. Toughness is a good choice for beginners, but there are other, better feats to choose from. Improved Initiative is a good one; little beats a spellcaster who goes first in every combat.

But I think you are going for a more indirect route to spellcasting. Spell Focus - Conjuration could be a good choice (especially for a charlatan such as yourself.) The saving throw feats (like Lightning Reflexes) are good picks too. Item creation feats would also be good choices (and will enhance your inventory.)

P.S. You may also want to pick up ranks in a few other skills: most notably, Appraise. (Know - History would be a good skill too.)

That would have been advice too.

You could also pick up some ranks in Perform...perhaps via the Feat Cosmopolitan instead of Lightning Reflexes.
