I know this isnt the Cthulhu boards, but no one there is answering me so i will try here...

So, I have never played Cthulhu before, but one of my friends decided that he was desperate to run it so now I find myself in the position to play.

There is only one problem. I have no idea what kind of character to play. Having never played this game before I haven't got a clue what is appropreate or what would be good. To top it all off he is using the 3d6 method of character creation, so I also need to come up with a character that it interesting enough to be worth playing even if I roll craptastic stats (which I usually do, and let me just say that playing a character where none of your stats breaks 12 can be just a wee bit frustrating).

The game is set in 1890, and I was thinking of potentially playing a Courtesan from New Orleans, but need sugestions for rp ideas. Will also welcome any intersting character ideas. The rest of the group is a Medium, a philosophy student, a multiple PHD archeologist (read Indiana Jones), and an "items broker" (read villian's from Indiana Jones)

Thanks!

First of all, this is the character development board. You do not have to apologize for posting about your character here, it is the place to do so. For any gamew you may play.

That being clear...

Focus on what the other characters aren't: normal people. They are intellectuals, adventurers (or both) and even occultist! They seem to be destined to cthuluish adventure.

But you? Make yourself with a normal intelligence, 10 or 11, no more no less. Make yourself married, father of a few children to feed. Make him have a normal job in an industry. A blue-collar worker. Strong strength. Strong constitution. Perhaps a very good wisdom and charisma. Likes to go at the local tavern, maybe have an alcoholism problem. He's not a hero.

He's just at the worst place at the worst time. And now he is trying to decide if he's going to fight the abominations and try to save the world, at the expense of his own life... or care for his family and pretend he knows nothing. Maybe fake his own death to protect his family...

Eventually, your character could be the most interresting of all, as he is the group's tie to normalcy...

In the 1920's Call of Cthulhu campaign I'm currently running, the characters are:

A Catholic Priest
A Catholic Nun
A University Biology/Chemistry student
A Police Detective
A WWI Vet, now an electrician
A Stock Broker

That might give you some ideas.
