D&D 3.5 Con Artist, need suggestions [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm going to be starting a 3.5 eberon campaign soon. The chameleon class (I think it was in races of destiny) caught my eye as being really neat and kind of unique, and I may want to give it a try, so I started envisioning my char.

What I'd like to make is a real con artist, a quick talker. I want someone who can walk into a temple of Pelor and convince the head honcho that he's a devoted cleric, etc, basicly you never know what he's really thinking, and he NEVER stops acting. I see the chamelon class is a good match for that, as I can be a fighter, a rogue, an arcane caster, a divine caster, a nature char, etc. I was thinking of changling as my race(the PrC specifies human or doppleganger, but changling is essentially halfhuman halfdoppleganger so it makes sense to me, we'll see what the DM says) or, baring that, human.

I guess what I need is a good lead in to chameleon. It's a PrC, so I don't know what some good base class choices would be, or even some other PrCs to compliment. For PrCs, I saw the Evangelist, but it's not quite right from a roleplay perspective, and the beguiler base class also didn't seem quite right to me, though feel free to convince me otherwise. I also looked at just taking 1 level of a bunch of different classes, but from a mechanics point of view that doesn't seem to mesh well with chameleon.

My main concern is roleplay, but it's also important to me that the char not be weak (which I'm worried about with 1 level of lots of classes), or else it won't do too much good to the party. Any suggestions from anyone? I'm allowed to use just about any official source (not unearthed arcana), including dragon magazines.

I believe that you're in the clear on the changeling chameleon idea: I think the PrC explicitly says that in Eberron, changelings can be chameleons.

Rogue is the most obvious lead in -- especially if you use the changeling rogue racial substitution levels from Races of Eberron.

Bard is another possibility.

Beguiler is also a good choice.

A cleric of the Traveller, with the Trickery domain, can also do it, though personally, I wouldn't.

You don't need a lot of different classes, with 3 classes you can get nearly anything you need.

First off.. Bard, the jack of all trades of the base classes. You get healing spells, so can impersonate a low level cleric and get use magic device to be able to use wands and impersonate a arcane spellcaster. (I dont have my books on me, but wasnt there a feat that allowed you to make a certain skill you have in one class be a class skill for all classes or something? cause then you can use that for use magic device)
Second, Rogue. You will need a lot of skills (consider taking 1st level rogue) and sneak attack, trapfinding, Uncanny Dodge and evasion can be life savers!
Finally, Barbarian. Light armor will be your thing with the other classes, so Barbarian is a better choice then Fighter. You get Fast Movement, Rage and d12 hit dice! You are a tough guy!! Also, if you dont take that much levels in Rogue, you can take a few more in Barbarian to get your Uncanny Dodge. Finally, a barbarian has a fair amount of skill points , so during those levels you dont loose that much in the skill department.

I love the concept! Maybe I'll use it as an NPC in my Eberron campaign once :) If you don't mind of course..

Haha, not at all, go right ahead :)

Thanks for the advice, bard and rogue do sound like good choices for starting out, and barbarian does offer some very interesting possibilities.

I'll have to check out those substituation levels, but I need to pick up races of eberon first
