We're starting a new campaign in D20 Modern. We only have 2 players, so we're doubling up and each playing 2 characters. My primary character is a Fast 3 gonnabe gunslinger. He began with the Adventurer to gain Jump and Spot as class skills. He has max ranks in Drive, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Sleight of Hand, Spot, Tumble. His feats are Point Blank Shot, Double Tap, Two Weapon Fighting, and Heroic Surge.
His name is Akira Ramirez. I picture him as looking like that guy on Andromeda who betrayed Dylan before the big time freeze thing. Without the pointy bits, of course.

The other guy I have is a Tough 1/Smart 2. He's the Driver/Demolitions Expert/Fixerupper guy. I'm kind of picturing him as having a big afro, if only because I gave him Energy Resistance 3, because he's always accidentally electrocuting himself. I don't even have a name for him yet. I think his feats are Vehicle Expert, Aircraft operations, Builder, and Vehicle Dodge or something like that. Kind of like BA Baracus, but with more hair and less bling. I just don't know how military a 'fro is.

Any ideas on why they signed up?

The campaign is about an off-the-books Homeland Security type deal that works under the aegis of a Congressional Subcommitee. We're based out of Alaska and will go on lots of international missions.

We play on Sunday, so I got plenty of time to flesh these guys out.

I don't know if your aware of this or not but the Bureau of Homeland Security doesn't employ only military personnel so they could be civilian law enforcement agents. Also if you want them to be in the military it would be a good idea to think of what branch they would be serving in (USN, USA, USAF and USMC). I don't know what weapon the gunslinger specializes in so it is hard to say what he would be doing although it is likely he would be employed in a more specialized role then a common soldier (maybe the sharpshooter in an infantry squad or other such role). The second character sounds like he would serve as a driver or supply officer to me. As for reasons for joining the military you could say that the mechanic joined out of his desire for adventure and a good motive for both could be a college education (especially if their families wouldn't be able to provide them with one in any other case). It also could have been pressure from their faimilies (they may come from a family with a strong military background that wanted them to join to learn discipline, duty etc. etc.), don't forget patriotism either it has been known to motivate people to join the armed forces. Also the character may have wanted to learn an important skill that is only taught or best taught in one of the armed forces (for instance the USN has some of the best fighter pilots in the world and the USAF has cutting edge aviation engineering programs etc. etc.). Oh and as for the aphro it could possibly be allowed in a job close to home (i.e. away from active combat operations and the like). Well hope that helps.

We won't actually be working for Homeland Security. Actually, we'll be working in a less creepy version of it. Under Congressional scrutiny, not Presidential.

I'm thinking maybe the driver/demolition/fix-it-upper guy can be Jewish. I just want to use the name Ari. Ari and Akira. That shouldn't be too confusing. :D
