So my next character is going to be a desert elf (UA) warlock with the Half-Janni template (DR313 or Sand). I'm trying to see if the DM will let me drop the whole "demon pact" roleplay of the warlock and say that he aquired his powers from his genie blood. What I'm looking for is backstory ideas as well as suggestions for how his father (Janni) became involved with his mother (elf). The setting is Kalamar, and his level will be around 8-9 if that helps.
Also if anyone knows a good "Dragon Disciple" for Half-Genie instead, I might use that instead of the template (+3 LA yuck!)

UA=Unearthed Arcana
DR= Dragon Magazine 313

Which desert do you see your character hailing from? here's a little something for a character from the Khydoban.

The city of Dynaj, on the edges of the harsh Khydoban desert, has long been under invisible rule by the Congregation of the Dead. Your mother, as a member of the Church of Life's Fire, moved out of the deep desert to combat the oppressive Harvesters.

During the course of her trials, she occasionally had reason to summon otherwordly aid in the form of a jinn. Your mother, devoted as she was, had little time to settle down and raise a family. When she realized she had feelings for her divine ally, took it as a divine portent and bore its child. You.

Your mother was loving, and raised you well, but she would occasionally be gone for weeks at a time battling the Harvesters, and you were left in the communal care of the Friends of the Field, growing up indoctrinated in their ways. When you reached maturity, your heritage fully manifested, and others in the Church regarded it as merely another form of divine magic.

This is interesting because it allows you to be a member of the Church of Life's Fire, a non-typical path for a warlock. Given the existence of lay clergy (priests without levels in cleric, etc) in Tellene, it's not out of the realm of possibility, and would go great in a campaign that was based out of a single community, or a campaign where conflict with the Harvesters would be significant.

EDIT: LA+3 does indeed suck. See if your DM allows LA buyback, as per UA.

though i am not familiar with the warlock class or very knowlegdeable about janni ( i think it's like a genie) but i have a few roleplay ideas that might work for you.

perhaps your chacter's mother discover the janni imprisoned in his lamp. she was given the typical three wishes and after defeating the evil pasha of the desert town where she lived she set the janni free and they fell in love. your character could then be a by-product of this love and have special powers unique to half-janni's. perhaps the reason he adventures in that the evil pasha (or someone associated with him) has found a way to re-imprison the character's father. he then sets off to find his father and set him free.

if i were DM and this scenario happen an awesome climax could be that the character is forced to face off against dad who has been sent against him by his new "master".

as for strictly game mechanics you could adopt a genasi racial build. maybe add some more powers to represent his closer biolgical connection to the janni. such as a magical weapon that appears upon command (like he conjered it).

if you wished to incorporate a warlock class into thi character build an easy way to do so could simply be that you character has gained powers from a demonic source to save his father. he cares about him so much that he is willing to do anything to get him back. (i could forsee many moral delemia's as a great way to roleplay this desire to see his father safe).

hope this helps

it's just my take on it
