Devil be gone! or How to stop acting like a teifling [Archive] - Wizards Community

A PC in our game was getting out of control. She was not killing, stealing, or breaking laws... she was just a serious wench. However, the little teifling rogue had not always been such. Her only physical manifestation of her heritage was overly warm body temprature. However as the character's life as moved on, the demon inside her has become quite clear. Always having a bit of a smart mouth, she has begun alienating, insulting, and being generally unhelpful to her partymates, at one point standing motionless as she watched one of them nearly die. Why was she being so nasty, and how much worse could it get? Well, a little OOC knowledge from the player let us know that because of the violence she's seen since adventuring, the losing battles she's fought (including a nearly deadly for her duel against another PC), and her fiance left her, she feels more and more the call of her evil heritage. Overall, she is a miserable character to play and to play with.

How to fix this poor girl?

We mused on some ideas and agreed that if she somehow were free of her hertitage, she would calm down a great deal. The player isn't a powerplayer at all, but don't like the idea of rewriting the entire sheet. The question became how do we do this? And also could this be done without altering her sheet besides erasing "tiefling" and writing in "human"?

So could anyone give advice as to how to change a teifling into a human without great damnage to stats? Wishes and Miracles are not out of reach of the character which would be altering her. Essentally, we're trying to give an in-character reason why her personality, not her physicality would change.

All I can suggest is the cliched find-an-old-sage-and-go-through-a-bizarre-ritual idea. I don't think that every bit of magic has to work with the standard rules for casting spells. I like to have charms to keep chimneys free of bird nests and rituals of great power in my game, even though they don't fit with the official rules. I think that if your DM goes for it, it could even turn into a full adventure. Find the sage, find rare ingredients for the ritual, reach the only place that the spell can take place (doubtless surrounded by monsters) etc etc etc. I know it's sort of stereotypical, but it might be fun anyway.

Send them on a quest to find this half celestial and get an infusion of his blood into her to balance out the fiendish blood in her.

This could also give her interesting side-affects/powers.

Mark of Justice, Lesser Geas, Geas are pretty good at enacting some slightly "encouraged" personality modifications.

Pain is a great motivator.

Every time she does something evil get a stick and hit her with it. Bad Tiefling! BAD!

On a serious note: here is my advice for dealing with the problem.

Solution one: get used to it. The rest of the party just gets used to her behavior. Now this works if you have a womanizer or a problem gambler or someone who refuses to bathe. The rest of the PCs call her stinky and move on.

Solution two: Tell her out of game to stop it. I am sure that the rest of the PCs have a problem with this (plainly) chaotic evil character.

Now this is further complicated by the fact that she probably thinks she is a good roleplayer. The real solution is somewhere in the middle of the two solutions listed above.

She plays the character who (for example) is incredibly foul mouthed and gets into shouting matches with tavern keepers. The rest of the party knows that deep down she is a good person (like Han Solo) even though she is a witch.

Have one of the wiser, but more powerful characters begin to put her in her place. If she gets mouthy they silence her, by force if necessary. They can be on the cruel side at first, getting her to behave herself out of fear. Once she sufficiently fears that character you can begin to remold her personality. If she acts one way that character will fill her so full of dread and fear she won't be able to sleep at night, however if she acts the other way he is much kinder to her. Just make sure it is someone she can't easily kill. That character can justify it by saying it is for her own good and that they are preventing her from getting into serious trouble down the line.

A little discipline can go a long way. Even if she is only helping because she knows what will happen to her if she doesn't help. Some clever use of the silence spell would be great there too. She mouths off and you simply silence her by magic.

Great ideas, everyone! We're all ones for melodrama, so something like the ritual might go over well. And, yes, they have bought a wand of Silence just for her. The player has never been a problem before, and the character has been dealing with her misery in a more quiet manner (although as one PC put it, "It's the quiet ones you gotta watch").

The character has older and wiser PCs who are looking out for her and looking into just these sorts of options, mainly her ex-best friend and the leaders of her patron diety's church. By the time the group returns from their little adventure, they'll have figured something out.

Thank again for the imput!

She could undergo some ritual to get herself "purified." like something along the lines of going to a cleric of a good aligned diety, undergoing some complicated ritual which would "clense her soul" of the evilness that has manifested within her. Once its gone, she can continue to act as she once did, or better. It could also be part of a quest, like in Final Fantasy 4 when Cecil, a dark knight, did a quest to purify himself and become a paladin. the change doesn't have to be that drastic, but it could lift her spirits to the point to where her bad attitude isn't bothering the rest of the party as much.

I "vote" for this idea. It's great. Very interesting plot around it anyway :)

*Slaps forehead* Cecil!!!! Loved that guy! I'll let the player borrow my copy of the game to help her with morality movement should it occur.

We do have a few asimars and one or two half-celestial PCs in our game (between the five of us there are about 150 characters of various levels of PC and NPCness, so having a few of these oddities around isn't as crack as it sounds). One PC who has taken special interest in the character is a fiendslayer who would be able probably to research a ritual along the lines of what's been suggested. However, that fiendslayer isn't the most diplomatic PC. It'll take some serious RPing, but I'm sure she could convince someone of such a good bloodline to assist. Then again, RPing is what our group lives for.

Make it so she has to get reincarnated instead of resurrected at some point.
