As a manic depressive I can tell you most people's concept of the illness(also known as bipolar)is that it causes sudden mood swings.

Although this can be true, untreated the problem with MD is you go to one pole or the other.

Think as normal human mood as the equator.Think of a normal person getting hyper or depressed as the tropic of cancer and capricorn.

A manic depressive goes all the way to the poles

If I get depressed,I do not nt get a little sad.I get gargle with razor blades depressed.

I don't get real happy.I get bounceof the walls, take off the clothing and run down the streets naked manic.

With a manic depressive there is little if any middle ground when it comes to mood

Also, manic depression is caused by an imblance of the chemicals that send brain signals(neurotransmitter),it has a physical cause,so maybe if you have someone with craft alchemy or have an expert NPC who does you can have the party collect ingredients for an alchemical Paxil to cure your NPC

To role play it think extremes.Throw out all subeltyIf he is depressed. My gods life sucks,it is all pointless It he is happy think punch bowl on head at duchesses bowl.No tact.If someone is a bring killjoy. He will let him know in no uncertain terms.

Hope that hellps.
