Does this seem realistic? [Archive] - Wizards Community

My current character is a Gnome Wizard 2/ Urban Ranger 2, and we're playing in Eberron. So far, she's been advenuring out of boredom - the DM allowed Kender in the game, so I've decided to chalk it up to her having a little Kender blood, giving her the wanderlust but not the fearlessness. In the early levels she was quite the wuss, and to a pretty big degree she still is.

We had our first party member death a couple of sessions ago: the ninja went off to get firewood, and got dominated by some kind of monster and sent back to kill us. My character was about to sleepygas him (her prefered weapon is a Gnome Calculus, and she had some alchemical sleeping gas with her) but her plan was ignored by the rest of the party who proceeded to beat him to death.

I've decided that this has made her very nervous about the idea of being the subject of such a spell, knowing that the group will kill the 'traitor' who gets charmed without any remorse. Depending on the situation she may well have a breakdown if she's ever actually threatened with such a thing.

At the same time, she's recently added Charm Person and Hypnotism to her spellbook, and has used them to good effect a time or two.

Would it be realistic to start moving her toward the Mindbender PrC, given how scared of being dominated she is? I don't play her as being obsessed with power, which is how the fluff of that class comes off to me, but she certainly is the least voilent of the group and would Charm her way out of trouble rather than fight if she had a choice.

In this case a "yes" is enough.
No discussion. But if someone starts using a weapon out of fear haven't they been corrupted by the weapon?

"And if thou gaze into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee"
- Friedrich Nietzsche.

Which goes well with how "every action has a consequence". When your friends' characters decided to slay this dominated person they affected you by making you want to fight this magic. Fighting this magic for you is mastering it to protect yourself from it. When you master it you also learn to utilize it. When you have learnt to utilize it you have become as much a threat as whomever dominated the ninja.

I don't know your alignment. But by taking Mindbender you have the means to do what was done to your friend. And might it not be so that somewhere inside you the real reason for mastering this art is to achieve this power. People claim that they do not want power. People can claim many things. Their innermost wants are however hidden.

Bottomline: You have enough reason to take mindbender a thousand times.

She's CN, started with good leanings but now strongly neutral. After all, saving her own skin has to be priority one if she wants to stay alive around here.

I wanted to head toward being a Paladin of Freedom, but I don't think I can justify it in-character; she started out atheist and the Paladin of the group, who I was counting on to be a good influence, has turned out to be a bad one instead.
