I'm about to start playing a Doppelganger. With special rules set aside by my DM that ignores racial ECL (So, I will be a Doppelganger 8/Warshaper 5/Mindspy 5/Chameleon 10 while being only ECL 20). So, here's my question.

How does one roleplay an effective Doppelganger? Races of Destiny gives me ideas but, not enough.

How can I keep my identity from the party paladin? We have a Paladin in our party who is VERY righteous. He constantly detects evil and I am of evil alignment. I love the idea that's behind my character which is a non-assassin PrC assassin. While the party goes out to get some drinks, I'll be hittin' up the local guildhouse to "get some hits." Of course, I'll have all sorts of alternate identities and all but, what could I do to try and avoid our damnedable paladin?

I love the party I'm going to be joining with but, I'm afraid of being smote by our Paladin. If you're evil, he pretty much seeks to kill you. And, unless it's written in our character descriptions, party violence is not allowed. For instance, it is written in our Paladin's description to seek out and destroy all evil but not in mine to kill all good? Make sense?

ahhh zhe dopplerganger spy,
it's very easy my friend
1. spell immunity = true seeing
2. Permanent undetectable alignment/ mind blank (your choice)
3. don't reveal your are a dopplerganger until you have to use a form for exemple grodrick the dwarven druid as an cover up, with the huge bonus you got to bluff it's np to convince evryone you are the druid grodrick convince evrybody your a shifter and use combat forms from your classes and race, if they say that "hey you can't do that" accuse them of metagaming. If the paladin has no reason to mistrust you he will not constantly try to detect you. if you get tried of your identity you can return as for exemple almos the elven wereeagle, so the possiblities are HUGE, or you can act as a rogue of any race and only shift when out of sight, a huge paladin bodyguard arent wrong good are easier to trust they won't stab you in the back
besides if you can "convince" the paladin to do evil and play that you are the "emperor" (SW) soon you will have an blackguard instead, (make sure to steal his plyactary of faithfullness first) MANUPLIATE, TRICK, CONTROL, DO EVERYTHING FOR YOUR OWN GAIN, STAB THOSE WHO CAN BETRAY YOU, (no that was drows was it? ;))

Great ideas. I didn't even think about permanent spell immunity to true-seeing. Is their an item that would aid me in that? And, with that, undetectable alignment might not be such a great idea. I may be wrong but, if our Paladin goes to detect alignments and I don't have one that would be quite suspicious.

I like the ideas though thanks so much! My character's background is simple, I'm actually working for the bad guys. I am a spy who, daily, must find a way to report to my boss and tell him what the party is doing. I won't ever have to kill any party members even if I'm attacked or if my cover is blown I am supposed to attempt to run possibly to return as another guise. I think I'm going to definately go with Chameleon just for this purpose. I mean, if my cover is blown as a "Dwarven Druid", it would be very simplistic for me to feign my death and then come back as an "Elven Ranger." The party won't know and my DM has strict rules for the Chameleon organization as they are very secretive. So, the likelihood of any of the party members uncovering my true identity is unlikely.

I REALLY look forward to playing this character and you have given me some awesome ideas. Thanks so much Lionhearted!

well, the paladin wouldn't know cause they detect evil, and doesn't sense good, neutral, lawful or chaotic so undetectable aligment wouldn't give any suspicousy

besides who are the chameleons?

spell immunity a continius amulet of greater spell immunity (true seeing)
ring of continuis undetectable alignment
ring w. sending 3/day

not hard at all

The Chameleons are a group (and a Prestige Class) explained in the Races of Destiny. It is the most versatile prestige class ever created and is awesome to roleplay with a Doppelganger. I've done it once before and it is just so much fun.
