A similar message over there may get you a better response, even if it may not be the perfect place. In answer to your question: I don't think so. If you've ever played polo or some other horseback sport, you'll understand how difficult it is to use something like a lance in two hands and actually be better with it. From a rules standpoint, it may be allowable. |
| LuckyLeprechaun06-29-06, 01:46 PM | Well, mechnically it's possible, as long as you use "guide with knees," but mechanically doesn't mean the DM will allow it, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't allow it. But it's possible in the rules, so it's up to your DM. Edit: Also, why would you need the extra .5 strength bonus, is double damage on a charge not enough for you? You getting greedy my friend :P . |
| pyro_cat06-29-06, 02:50 PM | Guiding with the knees isn't the problem that I see, as a rider and occasional polo player myself, I can attest that this is easy to do, and would be even easier on a well trained warhorse. I think the problem would be with how you would actually use the other hand. First of all, you would have to reach across the horse, twisting your back, throwing off your seat, and putting your shoulders out of alignment: not the best position to absorb the shock of impact. Furthermore, as you know, very little of the actual blow from a lance comes from arm strength. You have to guide it, hold it, throw in a little flick (I think) and then ride it with some semblance of a followthrough to get your opponent off the horse (assuming you're jousting, not necessarily the case here). The damage comes from the force of the horse's movement. Another hand probably won't help in the least, and would be better used to hold a shield or more precisely guide the horse... Of course, this has nothing to do with RAW, I'm just saying that I wouldn't give a bonus if I was DM. |
| LuckyLeprechaun06-29-06, 03:33 PM | Well that is indeed what I meant, and I apologize for not making it clear, my problem was not with the guiding with the knees, it was indeed with the awkward hand positioning involved with holding a lance with 2 hands, and I know I wouldn't allow it. Sorry about that. |
