first time posting in this forum so if i dont follow certain guidelines i am sorry

I am currently playing a Human battle sorcerer-7/ Abjurant Champion- 5

i am playing him like a spoiled first son of a noble merchant and he started adventuring to waste time til his father passes on the family business. as he adventured he found out about his innate magical power but never really figured out how he came about it but by putting clues together he figured it was draconic somehow. after this last adventure(age of worms, no spoilers please) he pinpointed that it was sapphire dragon and now he is really getting interested in his family history to try and figure out how this happened and if he can find the dragon responsible.

So i come here today asking for a bit of help. i am working with my DM to put a background together. i dont want to go with the story line that the dragon polymorphed to human form and became intimate with a past relative. so i am here to find some help on some original ideas on how sapphire dragons blood has mixed with my family's bloodline

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas

Ok. I guess there are plenty of ways to get dragons blood in your system.

One of your forefathers was a dragonslayer but he/she got swallowed whole by a dragon. Your forefather managed to cut himself free, but absorbed a lot of blood through is wounds.
I'm not sure if this will fit a saphire dragon (alignmentwise) but perhaps this dragon was some kind of (evil) sage that had an experiment running. Perhaps he/she gathered a lot of specimens from different races and did all kind of experiments (fysical, mental, magical) on them. One of those experiments included giving the specimens blood to see what would happen. The dragon got killed and your forefathers were free.

Happy gaming

I believe all gemstone dragons are nuetral of some sort. That being the case perhaps it was repayment of a debt that led to a blood-sharing. Or the power may have been stolen by an evil ancestor.

Or you could go metaphysical...

A sapphire dragon takes a "pet" human as a servitor. Over many years, he - or she - begins to actually love this human. Unfortunately, the dragon is very, very old, and finally the time comes to depart to the great beyond.

In a final act of love and respect, the dragon cuddles up with the human, and slowly expires. The spirit travels through the human, and leaves a lasting impression on the souls of your family. Every so often, one of your family shows a trait of that great beast from so long ago... like your spell-casting, and your cousin Andrea's deep saphhire-blue eyes. It was said that your great uncle Ernie had a claw growing from one of his toes, but he died before you were born and you never were able to ask him.
