I keep hearing mention of a druids ability to change into legendary ape at level 13 (as well as other various other animals including even dinosaurs) How is this even possible when the PHB clearly states that wildshape is only normal animals that the druid is familiar with.
Is there a list of available animal forms that the druid can assume at a given level? If so where is this list?

well this doesnt belong here, but dinosaurs are animals. And I believe the legendary ape is an animal too. As far as I know, druids can chose between dinosaurs, dire animals and regular animals ( from the core afaik)

A druid can take the form of any animal it is familiar with (this is pretty much just DM fiat) so long as the druid meets the size and hd requirements for the animal. Dinosaurs, animals, dire animals and legendary animals are all subtype "animal". However, I was of the impression that Legandary was a template, which is not allowed. I suppose it might be avoidable if the animal's statistics are actually printed in a source seperate from the template source (which ape might be, but I don't know where) but that's kind of a grey area.

Yes, you may definately change into legendary animals. It actually says at the end of the first paragraph about legendary animals that they are rarely encountered outside of high-level druids. They are not templates, and they have the animal type.

Sidenote: Excuse my blindness, but could someone point out the place where it says druid can't change into templated creatures? I must of missed it.
