One good idea for a background story is to make his father or other relative a great champion of sometime, and he was a protector of the good. When your dwarf was young he was told fantastic stories and absolutly fell in love with the idea of leading people justly, forming his own kingdom or whatever. So he worked hard, training as best he could, and then left as soon as he could to join the military and earn himself a name. This is a pretty basic story but you could easily fill it with good ideas, such as " One day while playing in the mines with his best friend bob, a "creature" attacked, and bob and dwarf faught it off, and from that moment on, they believed that they were destined to be good, kind kings, and forever friends"
Also, give him an interesting quirk, and a complex personality... makes for better role playing ;)
Anyway, just my thoughts on the matter

Ok, dwarven fighters are about as common as finding rocks on the ground, were gonna have to add a little spice to this character.

Jazz it up a little.

Ok, forget about following your fathers footsteps, forget about following any set dwarven ways. Youve heard that like most of your dwarven clan, your father died in the *insert strong sounding name here* wars.

You were raised in an orphanage with dozens of other children of most of the other common races. You dont have your races usual distrust or dislike of other races (such as elves or half-orcs) instead he has a more egalaterian (sp) view of things.

Since the orphanage was overflowing with children after the war, the rules were very strict and the children were constantly watched for misbehaviour. Some of the more roudy children tried to rebel at times, but they were quickly put back into place by the staff.

When you came of age and were allowed to leave, he found that life outside was too daunting for him. The freedom and lack of binding rules meant that he had little guidance, and not being told what to do lead him to wander aimlessly for several days.

Near out of money, he wandered into a middle aged man who was draggin *Insert a pc or important npc name here* down the street, screaming and yelling that they needed to "focus more" and that the "stict ways of military life" would "straighten them out".

Your character seemed to like the idea alot more than the poor youth who was being dragged along, who was sobbing and full of tears. You decided to follow the pair and enlisted straight after them.

You found that you loved boot camp, the uber strict rules and intense physical training was exactly what you were looking for. Your enthusiasm seemed to confuse the drill sargent, but you quickly became the most promissing private.

Several of the other privates found it hard, and had trouble with the training. You looked after them, picked them up when they fell, kept their spirits up when they broke, you became a bigger brother for the entire team. And your the only private who didnt break from the training.

Thats basically all i can think of atm.... hope it helps.

He'd look after all his squad mates, be a bigger brother to them all, know all their names and their stories, get on with everybody.

Hope this helps, if not, ill come up with more later.

What the other guys have put down is good but I have a different take on the father of your dwarven champion.
Your clan has a long and proud history of valor and prowess in battle and every one of your male ancestors have died in glorious battle against the forces of one evil or another, except one. Your father was a coward, he hid when danger came and ran when it found him. His life has heaped shame on your family to the point where the leaders of your home city/town/mine have started talking of asking or more likely telling your father to leave.

Your father is not a bad dwarf, infact he is a gifted artisan and loves his family dearly, but for some reason he has no courage for battle. It has fallen to you as eldest son to regain the family honor. Taking up your family crest you have set out to regain what has been lost.

Just another angle for oyu to consider.
