Been toying around with this idea for a while, need help to flesh him out.

I'm thinking of a dwarf fighter (starts at 1st level) with a greatsword, who was called to be a paladin in his youth, but passed it off as the effects of the mushrooms him and his squad ate while on an mission to get rid of some goblins in the area (Basically the experience that got him up to first level).

Around 7th level I'll have him "hear the call" again, and start taking levels in paladin.

Any takers?

Hm, the idea does sound intriguing but really depends on what level you are starting campaigning at. I think it sounds more feasible if your campaign starts with 7th level characters, that way it just seems like you're starting back up. I have had an idea lately of something similiar. Like an old war hero, veteran, or adventurer who called it quits finally getting back in the act.

I picture the character, in this case a dwarf, after many years of adventuring and excitement hanging up his mitts but one day is put in a position to resume the call, perhaps intentionally or perhaps not. The character could have been a savage barbarian that finally hung it up and stopped raging and exploding into violent fits, he took up life as a gardener because it was the only think that soothed him and kept him sane.

The character had stashed his weapons and armor behind a false wall, hoping to forget about them while also keeping them close if he ever needed him. Maybe war tears his home apart and he needs to pick up his weapons again and crusade on, letting himself rage once more.

I guess how I started thinking about this was that scene in Kill Bill where the weaponsmith creates the katana and remarks, "I have created something I swore an oath to god twenty-some years ago that I would never do again." I hope that was atleast a little bit helpful or even in the same direction of where you were trying to go.

Well, interesting idea, but it doesn't fit what I have in mind.

The idea is to have just enough military experience to put him at level 1 fighter instead of, say, a warrior or a common...or a smith :p

And, like I said, he'll start at level 1, the main part about this character will be the choices he makes that shows him the path again.

It's kind of hard to plan that stuff out in advance, by third level you might have a completely different outlook on your character that you did at first so you kind of have to go with it. Kind of hard to plan what the DM will throw at you, perhaps saving some dwarven clerics of Moradin before you take your 7th level will help you hear your calling more clearly but you'll never know what he has in store. I guess just focus on the here and now, you're first level.. perhaps you can play as a fighter who has heard the call to become a paladin but has flat out ignored it and it can be a constant struggle that is written in your backstory.
