Im going to create a 1st dwarven gestalt Ranger/Scout that will be acting as a bounty hunter. Im just not sure on his background or anything of that sort. All im sure of is that im wanting to play him as a merciless and heartless bastard who is willing to go to any length to catch his prey. First and foremost in his mind is his survival, he doesnt care how he has to live, just as long as he is alive. No act is to shamefull or to vile.

Possible favoured enemy might be goblinoids or orcs (just because of the racial bonus against them...and they make good enemies)

Im wanting one of those "im the last of my clan" backgrounds, but its been done to death. Can anybody give me a hand with this charcter?

Maybe you got kicked out of your clan for some crime, and now roam the surface world, bitter and resentful, taking out your rage on various favoured enemies, and anyone else who gets in your way. Take Favoured Enemy: Dwarf, and hunt your own kind.

Or perhaps your clan recognised you as a heartless murdering bastard, but unable or afraid to do something about you, they decided that their safest option was to hire you, and set you loose upon the enemies of dwarfkind.

When i say that he is heartless/merciless im not saying that he is a cold blooded killer who goes around slaying randomly, more along the lines that he wont listen to the pleas of somebody he has captured or that of starving peasants. He is not a villian but he sure as hell isnt a hero either, im thinking of walking the fine line of making him an anti-hero.

He will often take contracts from good organisations to capture criminals (im hoping to have him take the bloodhound class) but will also take the odd contract from cults or evil organisations. He is a bounty hunter, not an assassian. If the contract says "Dead or Alive" he will try and take them alive (often pays more) but again, if its integeral to his survival, he is willing to kill a captive.

As i said, survival is this guys first priority. He knows that if he goes around killing innocents it will tick off the town guard, so he doesnt do that, not that he would care if he did.

I like the idea that his clan saw what he was like, and sent him on a mission though, sounds interesting. They could send him out to bring back traitors of the clan. "send a bastard to catch a bastard" :P

Ok, im going to make him a ranger/hexblade (instead of a ranger/scout) and he will be True Neutral.

When everybody he tursted had turned their backs on him and he was about to die, he gave up. This utter dispair of being all alone manifested (hexblade curse) and gave him the power to escape his captors. Now he feels nothing for anybody but himself and he swore an oath never to give up again. He will always fight on, no matter how dark things get.

Thats the basics of his background, ill post an indept version later. Anyway onto other things now. He can only use light armor, and im going to have him take the TWF path from his ranger class. What signature weapons should i use? Should i take a weapon of legacy? (i know nothing about them, i dont have the book)

Any help in fleshing out these minor details would be great, thanks guys.

Sounds like he's made a fairly concious decision to be a loner, and I think people like that set up walls around themselves to keep people away. He should have some behaviour ready to use against people that try to get close to him - rehearsed lines, favourite insults, and even some pessimistic proverbs to quote to justify to others - and to himself - why he trusts no one but himself (and possibly his animal companion!).

In terms of weapons, I think an urgrosh would be good. Its intimidating enough, and the versatility of having two damage types and the ready-against-charge feature is pretty sweet. If not, the ol' dwarven waraxe is a good primary weapon. If you have the feats to spare, the Shield-Axe style feat from Races of Stone is pretty nice.

By the way, I suggest selecting humanoid races for your Favored enemies. More often than not you'll be tracking humans and elves and halflings and the like. Goblins and orcs tend not to pose much of a threat after a while anyway. Your dwarf may even have a case of racial elitism, and he may look down on other "weaker" races, considering them to be easy prey (which they sort of are for a ranger with the appropriate favored enemies lol).

Thanks Gingerbread Guy, thats alot of good info, i believe i shall take the dwarven ugrosh as his weapon, ive never had a character who used one before.

Also, i was thinking about the favoured enemy thing, ill take elves (first) and dwarves second...since they were the people who left him behind.
