First of all a description of my character:
Str 14 / Dex 12 / Con 16 / int 12 / wis 18 / cha 10
He is a male dwarven cleric who stands about 1.55 meter tall with a brown beard, brown eyes and brown hair. (doh)
His god is fharlaghn and his alignment is n-n with the luck and travel domain (as far as that matters).

On the moment he’s on search for his family (mother, father and a sister) who were taken away from him by goblins that most likely would try to sell them as slaves. Currently I’m almost on the point of finding the goblins (and my family I hope).

He likes to dance and drink to start with.
The reason to travel on is his curiosity towards the world, things to see, places to visit perhaps even in search for a challenge.

Can you help me build out my character's personality and give him some more ingame dept.?

A few questions spring to mind. Perhaps by asnwering them, you can gain some more insight into the character.

Fharlaghn? I mean... that's not Moradin. What brought him to that religion... a chance encounter, a vision or dream, or was it that his clan was always followers of that faith.

Why cleric? Just because one reveres a certain god doesn't make them suddenly a cleric. Were they called? Was their a sudden transformation? Or did the character enter the ranks of the priesthood as a servant or accolyte and slowly work his way up through the different levels of initiation.

Sounds like the rest of his family have been taken by golbins. But why not him? Did he fight them off? Does he bear a scar from that grevious battle? Did he flee or hide (and now bears the shame of it)? Or was he away, on one of his many wanderings, and only learned of the tragedy upon his return.

And is his search for his family what drives him to travel now, or has it merely given a purpose to his meanderings.

What weapon does he use? Why? Where did he get it? Did he always carry one?

And why does he adventure with the current group? Who are they? Are they all dwarves, and if not, why does he tolerate them?

Try "How to create a rloe-playing character" by Trydan, it's very handy guide. For you, the part about describing a day in your characters normal life could help you out. Give him som manners quirks he uses when on the road, when meeting other travelers. Perhaps a saying or two when he sees people off their journey. Or when he sends a orc on his last passage to Grumsh. Just a few notes on your character sheet to remind you during play.

Thanks for the reply's. I'll be doing some reading on the guide of Trydan this week.

I'm thinking of the following:
My mother and father had a inn and my dwarf was the one that traveled around to get the goods for the inn (beer and that kind of stuff). So when he came back the inn and the village where both destroyed... or something like that ;)

Posting more later this week. :)

Okay this is what i came up with, first try:
--------
His father was a blacksmith in a little village. He always sent his son out to sell the goods in the nearby city. One day the son came back and he found his village burning and in ruins, he quickly ran towards his home and found his youngest sister lying there on the ground with a goblin standing before her. He took the first weapon he could get from his car, which seemed to be a heavy mace, and smashed the goblin apart. Then he prayed towards his god for help because his little sister was dying. On that moment he unleashed some very strange magic for a dwarf. With this new power he cured his little sister.

He brought his sister to the city and let her stay there with some family. Then he gathered some information about goblins and it seemed that his father, mother and older sister would be sold as slaves. After that he went towards a temple and there he learned about his magical powers. Priests there told him that he had the power of healing. This seemed to be given by the god of travel so from that point on he honoured the god and prayed towards him each morning. With this knowledge he went on search for his family (mother, father and a sister) who were taken away from him by goblins that most likely would try to sell them as slaves.

Now the journey seems to have led him pretty close to his goal, he even found some people who offered to help him.

Since he travelled allot towards the city and villages around it he is more wise then the average dwarf. It can take him some time to learn certain things because he isn’t very fast of mind. Mostly he stays in inns because he likes to make fun, dance with people and sometimes even to drink allot.
--------
Forgive me if my english grammar isn't that well overall but hey, i'm trying the best i can ;)

I'm still planning to read that guide and to describe a day of his life before the attack of the goblins.

Any comments so far?

God Job!

Have you considered his ambitions(multiclasses and prestige classes)?
How he reacts towards the other races/religions? As an ispiration you could try to read about the dwarven god of travel in Forgotten Realms"Faiths and Pantheons", Marthammor Duin. Just to give you a feeling.

Nice.

The priests at the temple, who told him about his magical powers... Did they tell him how to use them, or in some other way instruct him how the power should be channelled?

Could have they given him a prayer book for Fharlaghn ?

Like someone else suggest, why more Fharlaghn than Marthammor Duin? Perhaps his familly live for a very long time amongst humans? Perhaps were they driven away from their dwarven community for some reason?
