| ting-bu-dong05-26-05, 08:27 AM | Hi, I am playing a dwarven hunter (ranger 3) in an upcoming one-shot. The fluff is that he is member of the hunter guild of a small dwarven stronghold in an arctic region that is plagued by an unusual number of magical beasts (the DM mentioned something like chaos magic and wild magic being a factor, so anything's possible). He is supposed to be of the tough predator type rather than the sneaky ranger type. Currently he has the following feats: two-weapon fighting (combat style) track endurance rapid reload Rapid reload is supposed to make him able to skirmish (i.e. remain mobile in ranged combat) but at the same time stick to his trusty crossbow, rather than those sissy bows (according to dwarven spirit). I am unsure on what his 3rd level feat should be. It is supposed to underline his strength-oriented hunting skills. Anybody got some suggestions? tbd |

| ting-bu-dong05-27-05, 02:20 PM | Hi, I didn't post it on the optimization boards because I don't want it minmaxed, I want the appropriate feat for the concept. I expect folks on the optimization boards to suggest me the feat that is most powerful, not most flavorful. By the way, I decided on Quick Draw for now, as it enhances the agile character of the dwarf. tbd |

| person2905-27-05, 07:27 PM | are you allowed to use all the books? what weapons does he use? i would suggest one of the following: weapon focus, power attack, or improved favored enemy (i believe this feat or a similar is in complete warrior, but i may be wrong) |
| ting-bu-dong05-28-05, 10:02 PM | Hi, he uses a warhammer as his main weapon and a number of light hammers as off-hand weapons and thrown weapons. For more distant foes, he uses a light crossbow. So, since I took the two-weapon fighting style, power attack is out (I already have decreased to hit numbers, and power attack would enhance only my warhammer attack while all attacks suffer the penalty). For now, I went the rapid reload/quick draw route to enhance the skirmishing aspect and to make switching between weapons easier. I don't think weapon focus is worth it for this character, since I won't have enough feats for the feat chains that have weapon focus. And the ability to draw weapons as a free action is much more valuable to this character than a to hit increase of 5% (especially for the thrown weapons). I am looking into diehard for my next feat choice, as well as far shot to improve his usefulness with thrown weapons. tbd |
