| Bandolar Goldcrest05-31-07, 01:47 AM | Okay, so I have this idea for a character concept for an upcoming campaign. Basically, he will be a dwarven version of James Bond. I plan on using the Infiltrator class from the Kalamaar setting, something of a Rouge and Ranger mix. I could use some advice and ideas on getting some of the mannerisms and what not. Super suave for a dwarf doesn't mean much to start with. So what tips can anyone give on making the usually gruff and blunt dwarves seem more refined, but still unmistakeably dwarven? How would he order his dwarven ale? Shaken, not stirred doesn't fit, but somethig along that vein? Any advice would be appreciated. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose05-31-07, 01:59 AM | Well first off shaken not stirred is about knowing exactly what you want. Dwarven ale 2 parts whisky would do just as nicely. As for playing him super suave don't go for finesse I say. Try to keep conversations open until you spot a mistake the other guy makes then hit that one point like a wedge into firewood. Keep a guy talking about nothing long enough and eventually he will say something he shouldn't most of the time. |
| DX205205-31-07, 02:13 AM | what Bond? if your going to replicate the best you will need Improved unarmed strike, because he fights a hell of a lot better then latter Bonds. |
| Fithero05-31-07, 02:17 AM | Ok, first off, if your going to play Bond you have to do it properly! 1) He actually sucks at gambling, he just finds the best way to cheat. 2) The whole "shaken not stirred" deal isnt actually about the drink, it's about how much effort the bar tender has to put into making it. James Bond has a huge ego, and likes people having to go out of their way for him. (I cant remember it exactly, but he only eats this specific type of rare chicken egg that has been cooked for some precise amount of time. 3) Nothing at all can faze you, keep your cool. Your James bond, your always in control and thinking 9 steps ahead. Basically, grab Complete Scoundrel, it will be your bible for this character. James Bond fights dirty because he fights to win. Peace |

| fiendish_platypus06-04-07, 05:26 PM | There was a Dragon Mag (an older one) on stealth and spies, my guess is 314 (that number just stands out in my head, although it's probably not correct), anyway, it has some items and stuff you might want to go ahead and check out. |
| xanthor06-17-07, 06:54 PM | This is actually quite untrue. In Sir Ian Flemming's 1953 novel Casino Royale, it clearly states that Bond is the best gambler in all of MI-6. If you were to play Jame Bond, make sure you have alot of knowledge skills, or better yet make him a Bard (Bardic Knowledge will save you doezens of points that you would have to spend on Knowledge skills. It would also give you fascinate and Suggestion, two things bond does very well). In the novels, James is actually NOT british, but in fact Irish. When he joined MI-6 he was ridiculed for joining a british secret service as an Irish-man. To prove himself, James just absorbed as much knowledge as humanly possible. This is why he knows a great deal. They, poorly, illustated this in many many films. Scene. M: 007, what do you know about...(insert topic relevant to the movie) 007: Not much Sir, Just (Five min. scene where bond rambles on about what he knows.) |
| Bandolar Goldcrest06-17-07, 07:38 PM | All of these replies have been helpful to a degree. But I'm not looking to play James Bond with Dwarven racial traits. I am looking to play a Dwarf who most epitomizes the traits Bond has to the best a Dwarf could. Suave for a Dwarf, not neccesarily a Dwarf who is Bond level suave. Does that make sense? |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose06-18-07, 12:43 AM | I refer you back to my original post since it occurred before arguments over what Bond was and wasn't started. A Dwarven Bond shouldn't be suave. He should be resourceful, knowledgeable, clever, and witty. Suave is about being smooth and diplomatic. It means getting everyone to like you and to be able to fit in anywhere. If you want a dwarven version of James Bond then I suggest trying to merge him more with Maguiver (have no idea how to spell that). A dwarven version simply won't have the smooth social skills and witty remarks that Bond did. He will however have a tremendous inner strength, intellect, and the ability to keep cool under extreme circumstances, all of which are notable Bond traits. |
| warwinner06-18-07, 06:38 AM | The more important thing is how a dwarf bond is going to woo all those bond girls Never considered a dwarf would be much attractive to medieval ladies [except dwarven women of course] Or if you just want a wannabe dwarf bond, which IMHO has more potential for humour |
| Bandolar Goldcrest06-18-07, 08:49 AM | I'm not expecting or even planning on having him sweep all the elf maidens off their feet. Sure, irrresistable to Dwarven women. And half-dwarves are a race that is allowed in this campaign, so possibly human women are potential targets there too. But that isn't the main focus I am going for. Terjon, your posts have been helpful. Maybe the stats for Thames Oakfrond might help further: STR - 12 DEX - 17 CON - 14 INT - 12 WIS - 15 CHA - 14 |

Not exactly appropriate |
| Bandolar Goldcrest06-18-07, 01:04 PM | These scores were generated using a stat array. We were allowed to swap two of the stats at the time. I felt the Intelligence score could be lower with this character than his Wisdom and Charisma. Gathering Information and knowing when people were being deceitful seems more important for this character. And the modifiers for Charisma and Wisdom are the same. |
| warwinner06-18-07, 03:24 PM | Some mostly mechanical suggestions 1] Some ranks in sleight of hand 2] One or two luck feats 3] Fight with ranged weapons [crossbows - hand crossbow or repeating crossbow is best] as much as possible not dwarven hammers and axes 4] Get your sense motive and will save up 5] Try and solve problems by manipulation/charm/stealth/talk rather than force or violence |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose06-21-07, 01:11 AM | Actually I think you've got the stats right. Especially if you're sticking primarily with rogue. You should have sufficient skill points to cover the bond tricks. Get complete scoundrel and start looking through for skill tricks you can learn. I don't think the charisma is too low since a dwarven bond would use his reputation at least as much as his personal social skill. I don't know about luck feats though. I'd want things like expertise and improved disarm. Unarmed fighting probably isn't a bad option either. If instead of ranger you dip in fighter throw every skill point from those levels into intimidate and pick out a single signature weapon. True bond used a gun but really it wasn't just a gun it was a walther ppk (read the bond gun). Bond sticks with the things he's best at whenever he gets the option and so should you. Part of playing Bond is knowing that some things would "just never work". This especially true if you make him a dwarven version which should be just a tad more practical. |
| 9506-22-07, 01:58 PM | i'd love to see what you work up..... and maybe a little story about how you play him great idea for a character! |
| Iapetus30306-23-07, 10:35 AM | I would suggest more Cha, if you want a James Bond style character. Sure, a dwarven Bond won't be as charismatic as a human Bond, but he would presumably have a very high cha by dwarven standards. (I.e. Godlike Cha -2, rather than just Godlike Cha). http://www.geneticanomaly.com/RPG-Motivational/slides/charisma3.jpg 17 dex doesn't "seem" particulalry Bond-like (he's not super-agile or anything), although I suppose it would be necessary for his skill with a hndguncrossbow, and his ability to not get hit despite not wearing armour. Unless there is a feat or PrC that allows you to add your Cha bonus to AC and ranged AB? |
