How's this one for you all?

Hanek Tolari, TN Necromancer 1 from Karrnath (Eberron region, if you don't play). I'm playing him as sort of a penitent sinner background. He was trained by the Karrnathi necromancers in the Blood of Vol (unbeknownst to Hanek) as an apprentice necromancer. He was seduced by the promise of knowledge and magic, a chance to finally seize some real, tangible power. And he went for it.

But then he turned back. He rejected the paths of night and the Blood of Vol and left Karrnath. He's now seeking atonement and a chance to make up for past wrongs by using his spellcasting powers--albeit creepy ones--for good rather than for selfish ambition.

But I need a reason why he turned around. I wanted him to have experienced real loss, something significant enough. And it should have to do with his rejection of his necromancer masters. Finding out about the truth of the Blood of Vol? But what was his big turning point? If anyone's got any ideas, particularly ones that tie in nicely with Eberron, I'd be much obliged. So get at it!

Alright heres an idea, first i change him from TN to CG maybe. Prehaps go with an old classic like he had a lover, and one of his masters was a female who wanted him for herself okay. Well she took it into her own hands to murder this woman in the nasties way possiable, and made her rise from the dead. Upon seeing this Hanek saw death was part of the natrual order of life, and fled from his home. Perhapes he tried to leave that life behind him, but they found him, and tried to kill him, or he had an epihnay and sought to destory the Blood Vol or get back at his masters.
Just a thought or Hanek had to take a test to see if he was commited to the cause; Hanek had to bucher his family and turn them into undead, after doing this dark act he fled the land seeking a way to stop this dark cult. Now Fly Fly Fast! LoL i hope you liked my ideas

Maybe he is a patriot more loyal to Karrnath itself than to the Blood of Vol, and Kaius 3's renouncing and purging of the Blood of Vol/Emerald Claw forced him to think about his loyalties and ideals.

Hmm... Not quite what you are asking for though...

Maybe he had a good friend or family member who was a solider in Karrnath's armies. That friend/family member then gets into a dispute with some undercover Blood of Vol member, and supposedly goes missing. However, your character finds himself asked to raise the dead body of that friend/family member, and realizes that the Blood of Vol was responsible for his/her death.

I do think Keith said that good necromancers would look at undead as exalted beings (if he is a member of the Blood of Vol). So he can just be unaware of the evil ways of Blood of Vol, and still be CG (I agree with Typhus; make him CG).

Hanek Tolari grew up as the son of a lesser noble in Karrnath. His fathers uncle, the head of the Tolari family, and an important and influent noble, had connections with the inner circles of Blood of Vol itself. Hanek's family was not aware of the evil aspect of Blood of Vol, since the Tolari family had been followers of the Blood of Vol in many generations, and followed as philosophy that undeath was the next stage of ascension. As a child, Hanek was introduced to the Blood of Vol priesthood, and learned about the exalted undead and the possibility of gaining eternal life if he was a faithful follower.
Hanek become a fanatically disciple of the Blood, and as he grew older, he studied the arts of necromancy under his master, Oilan Remari, a necromancer originally from Zilargo.
After many years, when Hanek had become an accomplished necromancer, he once overheard a message that Oilan Remari was about to send to the Korranberg Chronicles. Oilan was in reality a Korranberg undercover-reporter, and had in many years tried to confirm the rumors of a lich controlling the Blood of Vol.
The message spoke of the evil Blood of Vol, and that Oilan had discovered documents that confirmed the rumors of an old lich controlling the Blood of Vol, and perhaps even the very throne of Karrnath, was horrible news for Hanek.
Terrified by these news, which originally was not for him to hear, Hanek left Karrnath, beginning his quest for seeking out the people that believed in Vol the lich, something he thought of as blasphemy.
In his point of view, undeath was a gift to humanity, not a curse. Of Vol, he had heard nothing but that she was a holy prophet that had spread the word of ascension through undeathness. So this rumor of Vol being a lich, and an evil one too, was too much for Hanek to accept. He had to make things right again!

Hopes it helps
