ECL assistance [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-19-03, 05:58 AM Do those playing a character with a template that has an overall ECL of +11 (including HD) and 9 class levels gain ability adjustments every 4 levels for each class level (4,8) or for HD + class level (6 HD +9 levels =15 [4,8,12]) or for all 20 levels (4,8,12,16,20). Similarly for which levels do they get feats ? Is it for 9 levels (class) 15 (class+HD) or 20 ?

10-19-03, 04:47 PM As a DM, I have always had my PC's gain abilities and feats based on their CHARACTER LEVEL and not their overall ECL. It makes the most sense and is far less complicated. I am sure someone will disagree with me but, that is how I have done it and I haven't had any problems yet. I hope this helps.

10-19-03, 09:20 PM Well, from looking at the savage species manuel, when the monsters go up in level, its more like they are growing up and now actully gaining any experience per say. So i'd also have to say character level for doing the feats and ability points.
