I have been considering creating an Elan for Ghostwalk. Ghostwalk is a setting focused around portals leading to the next life. What I was thinking about is an Elan wondering what happened to the original human during the process of Elan creation. Did he die? Is he still in there? Did he lose his soul?

Because a human who becomes an Elan who had previously possessed class levels starts over as a first level character, it is interesting question what happened to the original.

What if you were a powerful mage before and suddenly were soemthing . . . different?

Anyway, I am interested in thoughts and comments as to how this question might shape the psychology of a character. If it matters, I was thinking the character would be an Elan telepath who used to have arcane caster levels before the transformation.

Playing an Elan is the ultimate way to start over again.
But What was it that drove the character to such a drastic life changing event and what is there to stop people from thier former life crossing it's path again and leading the character back into what it was so bent on forgetting.

It is possible that previously the character had commited some horrific deeds and as a method of atoning they sought a complete change.

Did the character know something in thier previous life that had world shattering possibilities and to prevent that knowledge from falling into the wrong hands they gave up thier former life completely.

Another possibility is that someone forced the change onto the character as a means of getting them out of the way, leaving a formerly powerful opponent weak and with no recollection or link to the previous existance.

I feel there would be in some cases an insatiable desire to know what came before, what brought you to the decision to change, why so drastic a change.

There is so many options for a DM to draw adventure hooks if not entire adventures from a character history for the Elan character.
I once played a character who was a warrior for good only to discover that my DM had decided that my character was once an evil archmage bent on destruction that had had his memory erased an new one created. Once this was discovered in the course of the adventure the character was faced with a terrible temptation and difficult decision.

It all boils down to why did I do it.
