The character is Jayberel. He's an elf Binder from Tome of Magic. I will present the character's background and then present my problem. I apologize in advance for the lengthy post.

Jayberel was born and raised among a clan of elves. Even as an adolescent, he was more personable and artistic than the rest of his kin and took great pride in song and dance. He began to compose his own music, weaving tales and ballads of past battles and ancient heroes whose tales he took to studying. As he grew older, he fell deeply in love with an elf maiden. His feelings lent his songs even more passion and it became apparent to the clan that with training Jayberel would become a bard of great talent, but this was not to be.

On one seemingly normal day, Jayberel's lover was slaughtered by goblinkin raiders. After a small skirmish, the goblins retreated and did not press in again. Jayberel demanded that the clan pursue the gray skinned murderers, but the clan saw no reason to risk the lives of more elves in pursuit a routed foe. Unable to convince the clan to destroy the goblins and lacking the power to exact revenge himself, he fell into a deep depression. He began to sing only sad tales of loss. While researching stories for his songs within the library of his clan's temple to Corellon Larethian (sp?) he stumbled across a hidden cache of books.

At first suspecting the stories to be forbidden tales of great catastrophes of which he could sing, Jayberel stole the books from the temple to study on his own. Within the tomes, he found not only the story of Leraje, but how to summon and bind her to his spirit as well. Seeing it for what it was, a way to quickly gain the power needed to slay the goblins, Jayberel bound Leraje and began to spend his nights hunting and killing the goblins who had claimed territory nearby that of the elven clan.

One evening, while performing the binding ritual, one of the clerics to Corellon Larethian came to Jayberel's home and stumbled upon the blasphemous act. The cleric had been concerned for the young singer, since he had not seen him visit the temple in some weeks now. After a quick argument over what Jayberel was doing and why, the cleric turned to leave to inform the clan elders. In a fit of panic, Jayberel took up his bow and shot the cleric in the back, killing him before he could make it out of the home.

With the realization of that act, Jayberel fled the village. He repents to Corellon Larethian and begs for forgiveness each time he binds a vestige. He travels to settlements of the other good races, singing tales of loss for his supper.

My problem is finding the motivation for the character to continue learning about vestiges and the binding. Additionally, I would like him to be good, preferably chaotic or neutral good and any ideas on how to better portray him as such would be appreciated. The only idea I have is perhaps making him view himself as some type of protector or instrument of vengeance for lovers, but I feel like that's too narrow and limiting as a PC.

The campaign hasn't started yet. DM said we're probably starting at around 8th level or so (which means there's definately room for more fluff and background if you'd like to suggest some) and that the campaign will most likely revolve around a criminal underworld. He hasn't specified the setting. Thanks if you made it this far, and thanks even more if you decide to reply.
