Elves generally have a strong connection to their communities and their notions of what they deem to be good, which, if you think about it, can get rather materialistic than what a Paladin is devoted to. That's why Elves weren't allowed to be Paladins for most of their existence in Dungeons and Dragons. They live long lives, which would make them gravitate toward materialism just to hold onto something nostalgic. Some believe that Elves are more spiritual than other races, but this isn't really so - they're more in tune with nature, perhaps, but that doesn't make them any more or less spiritual. For an Elf to become a Paladin, he has to be shown that there are things in the world greater than anything the Elves have built, of a purpose that serves something higher. He's going to fight the ultimate struggle, to vanquish evil. This new attitude means that he might not be all too welcome in his community anymore. My female Elven Paladin was ostracized from the forest because her quests was thought to bring ruin to the tranquility of the forest. She now resides with a Halfling village, where her son is cared for while she goes on quests. Elves are presented, in many cases, in the fashion of Native American tribes, and they hold strong ties to that tribe. A Paladin has to forsake those ties for the greater cause, and this really isn't easy for an Elf because of their culture and because Elves aren't as prolific as humans or other races. They don't have huge families, and their families can trace their geneology for millennia per generation. To lose one's family, then, has to be devestating for any Elf (well, maybe except Drow), and perhaps that's the biggest reason most Elves choose not to answer the Call. As to the Hellreaver, I'm not particularly familiar with the PrC. |
