Ive got a character (elf fighter) that im starting up and im having a hard time deciding what weapon/s he sould use. It has to be a weapon that is very *elven-esque* if you get me. I know the whole sword and bow is elven but its been done to death, are there any other weapons that could work?

Doesnt matter how simple or exotic it is.

Thinking Elven but steering away from sword and bow doesn't leave you with much but I get the feeling a finely carved white oak staff capped with silver and possibly with a spring loaded spike in one or both ends would be quite seemly. While a staff is generally considered a mages weapon there is no reason you can't use it to shake up the image of fighters and mages.

Or look at Peter Jacksons elves from Lord of the Rings, in the opening sequence of the Fellowship the Elves use a very long handled blade that looked, to me at least, very elegant and more than a little leathal. Dnd mechanics wise I am not sure how it would work or if there is an equivilent but maybe use the stats of the great scimitar but describe it with a long handle.

Yeah, i like the idea of the staff... it just isnt used to much by fighters these days, they always want a blade for some reason.

I was thinking, maybe some sort of spear (either a really large one, like the one the druid is holding in diablo 2 or the guy from the movie Musa (i think thats how you spell it) or maybe a double ended spear).

Failing that ill just give him a really wicked looking sword, not the simple straight bladed long sword but an exotic looking.... thing. Ok ive got nothing

In the Ultimate Equipment guide, there is a two-handed Martial Weapon called the Flax. It does 2d4 and has a crit range of 19-20/x2. Its just a two-handed longsword. I'm sure you could make it look like the wepons the elves used for the LOTR oppening scene.

In the CW, there are two new elven weapons. I know this because they are called Elven Thinblade and Elven Longblade ( ). Just a thought. But both of the elven weapons are exotic, so I would advise you to take the feat that makes you proficent with all racial weapons. Essentially making you proficent with any weapon that has your race's name in it :P . I love that feat.

Hope that helps

My favorite weapon is the Elven Courtblade.
2hand
1d10 18-20x2 slashing and piercing
The thing thats really awesome about this weapon is that its weapon finessable.
Its curved and its really cool looking. Its an exotic weapon and you can find it in Races of the Wild.

If you are looking for a spear-like weapon, then the great spear from CW would work as a two handed reach weapon. A staff would be really cool but in terms of game mechanics it doesn't do all that much damage. If you wanted to use a sword then a falchion. It has a good critical (18-20 /x2) and pretty good damage. (2d4)

A staff can be very effective, actually...I have a LG elf fighter/monk who specializes in it and makes a rediculous amount of attacks with it while making his AC quite high...

He's fun to play. Middle aged elf who likes to think of those younger than him has his students. The hothead human fighter in the group got really mad at being patronized and attacked him, so he just used his merciful quarterstaff and just played with him, finally knocking upside the head. As the fighter layed on the ground muttering to himself, he just crouched down, he told the fighter what he could have done better (as he had been the entire fight) and that he would be glad to teach him how to fight. (Keep in mind said fighter was of significant rank in a fighting acadamy)

I was thinking of a double ended sword of some form, maybe a falchion or rapier variety or something exotic like that. I dont want him to be too Dath Maul though.

The weapon itself is actually a weapon of legacy of sorts as its been used to defend the elven kingdom for generations (the king always uses it). If it was a double ended sword i was thinking it would be one type of metal one end and another on the other end (such as mithral and cold metal, or adamantine and cold metal)... dont even ask about the magical enchancement's on each end, i got no clue.

Anyway, any more thoughts?

I can just see a thin elf standing on a small bridge with a long, slender staff. The elf begins to spin and swing the staff about and you see it flex back and forth. Suddenly the elf stops, snapping the staff toward you, keeping you at bay.

Or ...

A road-weary elf slowly walks into town leaning heavily on a stout staff. The locals haven't seen an elf in ages and begin to gawk and stare. Some young toughs let their poor judgement get the better of them. One shot to the ribs and another to the backside send them sprawling in the street. And the tired elf keeps walking out of town.

Either versions of the staff makes perfect sense to me. A stout oak or hickory or possibly a whippy willow or even bamboo. Elves are reknowned for their love of nature. You could even enchant it with weapon enhancements or simply make a wooden staff Ironwood with the same spell and Permanancy.

Although, if you really wanted something exotic and had some real punch to it, you could go with the double spear. A staff that had a spearhead at each end (a 1d8/1d8 with *3 critical).

Eberron has the two-bladed scimitar, two-bladed sword but with scimitar stats, exotic weapon. What about boomerangs? Eberron also has those. Again, its exotic.

I've had a total blast playing an Elf with a duom (found in the Arms and Equipment Guide). It's an exotic type of spear with two extra blades along the shaft. It's so distinctive that the guy who painted the minis we use for the game felt the need to alter mine so that the spear she was carrying actually had the extra blades on it. It worked seamlessly and it really is a thing of beauty. :D

Kudos for coming up with a family history behind the weapon, too. It's a fun little touch to add. I did something similar, myself. My character's family are traditionally spear-wielders. Hadoriel simply took it a step further and learned the duom.

If you want to really make your weapon something that the character is very intimately related with, something everyone associates with him as soon as they see it, he should alter it as he goes along on his adventures. Hadoriel started out with just a regular ol' duom. Over the course of her adventures, she had it masterwork balanced, silver plated, and now she's looking to have to haft replaced with the tibia bone from a dragon the company slew. In short, you may want to consider having the weapon evolve along with your character.

Sweet water to you!

Does this make you related to royalty in any way? 'Cause that would have game effect... Sry to be a party pooper, but that's what my dm does to me

Yeah, he is actually the prince of the elven kingdom. Turns out were not playing the game anymore, but im still going to go ahead and write a story on the character...there are some parts that im going to keep secret but here is what i can say.

He is a half-elven prince of and Elven kingdom (his elven father is the king). His father and mother married to unite the two race-based nations.

Basically this guy looks up to his father and tries to be like him in all respects but always fails (blames being a half race). Anyway, his father ends up dying and he has to take on the role of king and he uses the ancestral weapon... and its kinda key to the story, so its gotta be perfect.

Any more thoughts would be great.
