I know the big thing with elves is the bow and longsword

my elf ranger is very very strong (str 20) and I thought a bastard sword is the way to go.... thats plausible right?

He can certainly use it but elves prefer more slender weapons. There is nothing stopping your ranger from going for it though.

It is a little unusual, but not outrageous. However, try to work it into the story. Perhaps it is the typical weapon for that particular elf-family. Or maybe it is a gift from a human barbarian. It could be magical - the only magical weapon the character ever owned. Or even something that is rumoured to posess some sort of forest spirit (even though these rumours are completely false) and the character is hoping that by wielding it, these powers might be revealed.

Or maybe your elf just prefers the feel of a heavier sword. He's so strong that the usual elf weapons probably feel like paper to him.

An elf with a 20 strength, that's interesting, I'm curious though, does he do the typical big guy type of fighting? What I mean to ask is does he do the headlong charge, or does he use his natural elven grace in addition to his strength to give his enemies even more pain? Any chance that we see his background, since that would explain why he would like a heavier weapon as well... Love the idea though :)

You could always try a combination of handaxe and battleaxe which would give you the apperence of someone that doesn't do the normal elven grace but real power. You could also go and use monkey grip for your primary weapon, you'd take another -2 penalty but It would be impressive to see an elf mind you, barrelling towards an enemy wielding a massive greatsword in one hand and a handaxe or the likes in the other hand.

You know, the first thing that sprang to mind for me was that in the Forgotten Realms, followers of Eilistraee favor all kinds of swords, but especially bastard swords. Although many of her worshipers are drow elves, not all are. Don't know, but even if you don't play FR, maybe you could find out from the DM if there's an equivalent to this in the campaign you're in. If not, I think a bastard sword's fine anyway. :-)

I'm curious about something; what does an Elf with 20 Strength look like?!

when i play we changed so that elves are proficient with all swords(except the two bladded sword), we play alot of elves, like 80% of our characters. We have elves with greatswords, and its very common. All swords are fairly similar so a bastard sword or a greatsword would be great for and elf.
