Well, I'm playing my first epic character, 25th level, so I have more money than I know what to do with, so what sort of magic items ring style?

My character is a Level 5 Fighter, Level 10 Weapon Master, Level 10 Lasher, for the people who don't have Sword and Fist, it means I am really good with a whip. One of my nice flashy tricks is when I disarm an opponent, I can deposit his 20 lb or less weapon in my off hand, which I just giggle and think of the late great Curt Hennig as Mr. Perfect, it just sounds like something I could see him doing. Beyond that, I'm wearing a Glamered Chain SHIRT of Heavy Fortification, so it looks like I'm wearing clothes, and am just unaffected by SA and crits. He will be Chaotic Good.

Most important question, my DM dropped a hint that I need to be able to fly, so this is a must, what would be the best way to go about doing this? I think the largest flying carpet would be quite suave, and the broom would be comical.

So what other nifty utility gadgets should I have?

What did you say that was sensored?

Tell us more about this character's personality and history. After 25 levels, a character will have kept the magic items he likes best -- not just the most useful items, but the items he really enjoys using. If you give us some more information, maybe we'll help you think up some custom items that suit your character.

A character who prefer to disarm an opponent or make him fall seems to have a better sense of humor than the fighter who attacks with the biggest sword and some power attack. He prefer to disarm an opponent perhaps to offer him a drink after this and make a good friend. But when things turn really ugly, he should be able to either defend himself with a second weapon of choice, or to flee ASAP. This way, an ability to fly is good.

And if you can disarm an opponent with your whip, perhaps should you be able to take the valuable relic some cleric is holding. Before he realize what's happen, you are already flying by the roof... :D

I'm thinking about it... the whip is the weapon of choice of Sune . You could substitue a level or two for a templar of Sune. You don't lose many things (you gain weapon specialisation for free), and you gain a wonderfull back story!

Hiho,

A really nasty whip of hurty bits would be nice. I've always been partial to Brilliant Energy whips because they just plain look neat, or something with a damage bonus [ie Flaming, Frost, etc] because they'll continue to do damage if you use the whip to entangle.

Just a guess... but I think the "****" is Shirt without the r... what a typo...

How about an Animated Dagger Whip... I think Epic Black Studded Leather would go better with whips than Chain Shirt... but whatever floats your boat... http://www.geocities.com/aielmanspear/diablokingwt.txt

So far, I was just planning on using this +5 Grasping Disarming Sweeping Mighty +4 Whip Dagger ( +3 to Disarming, +6 to Tripping, ignore weapon size, ignore two handed), but it seems I'll need more whips.

I plan on having two mundane run of the mill whips, to flip switches and just to do bar tricks in general, since they only do subdual damage.

What should be my actual damage dealing weapon? I was thinking a +1 Brilliant Energy Screaming Holy Wounding Whip Dagger, because 4 shouldn't make much of a difference, and I wouldn't be using it to trip or disarm.

On the subject, he is a humble man, who wishes to go back to a somewhat normal life, but is too paranoid to quit walking around with gear to defend himself. He prefers at the least to look like a non-epic adventurer, not exposing armor, telling stories, or showing riches.

I was thinking of just switching the Chain Shirt to Armor of the Celestial Battalion, as its much better, and has Fly at will, and Magic Circle against Evil. I'm starting to think I should just go to the Min/Max board, I'm a fish out of water here on mechanics more than story.

Some advice.... epic style is all about imagery (at least, from my experience). Say you have magic item that allows you to fly; does it make you pop off the earth like superman? That's right, it doesn't. After screaming the Auran command words, wings of flame emerge from your shoulders, reathing you in brilliant light and connecting you to the heavens.
Or something like that.

Also, someone mentioned getting a flaming or brilliant energy whip. From where I see it, this is a really good idea. Nothing like a tendril of flame leaping from your hand, moving with the speed of the wind, the grace of a serprent, and controlled as easily as your own hand.

Also, your clothes.... since your wearing glammered armor, don't just where a brown tunic and tan breeches. Try looking at RPG characters various fantasy art for inspiration for groovy duds.

Finally, don't forget character history. As you are an epic character, it's assumed that you've been around the block. Think about past lovers, mortal enemies you have slain (or have you? ), political and religious powers you endeared yourself to our alienated yourself from.... and so on.

So you say you want some style, and then you come up with plain old D&D items with a million bonuses. If that's what you're looking for, you're right that the min/max board is the place to go. If you really do want style, and the advice of us role-playing types, I suggest you start with the appearence of the item, move on to functionality, how your character uses it, where he got it, why he likes it. When you've done all of that, pop on a few bonuses to increase the creation cost.

That's why I asked about your character's personality and history. By the time he's reached epic levels, his personality should dictate what kinds of items he carries around. He's no longer a poor little level 10 character, who has to grab at any magic items he can get. This guy has the funds to commission any item he wants, and the power to go questing after any item that strikes his fancy.

For example, the flaming wings and flaming whip suggested above are great ideas, but if your character is afraid of fire, or if he prefers the cold, or if he's a thief-type who doesn't want to be conspicuous, then those won't work.

And what's a whip dagger, by the way? I'm imagining a dagger-blade attached to the end of a whip, but that would totally ruin the effectiveness of the whip, and it could no longer make that snapping noise when the tip breaks the sound barrier, because the tip would be too heavy to go that fast.

Use one of the rituals in the Savage Species book to give yourself the Half-Celestial template. The precedent for such an act has been in the Savage Progressions articles on this website.

Non-magical flight is really really good, as are the spell-like abilities that you'll instantly gain access to.

Of course, I might just be saying this because I really liked my CG Half-Celestial Human Fighter 7/Weapon Master 10/Psion 3 (yeah, what was I thinking) but hey, I found non-magical flight very useful at higher levels, plus you're a half-celestial. The flavour that comes with that is just excellent. :)

In regards to you being epic, you need to remember that there are NO limits. You can have a +15 Whip Dagger with Epic abilities (Fiery Blast?) and also Armor Abilities (Speed?). There is no limit to the number of abilities that a single item can have. It can also be intelligent and have a billion powers there too. Be creative and have fun.

When it comes to rings, Ring of universal elemental immunity. No elemental damage, EVER!!

One thing to consider when making a weapon for an epic character is to give it unique properties that give the character many options. A whip that can cast a heightened hold monster X number of times per day allows a character the ability to not have to kill things sometimes. You can also have your armor create the effect of a protection from arrows as a 15th level caster whenever you suceed at a perform: dance check dc 18. This gives you reasons to cross class some skills into perform and give your character some flavor. A fighter who dances and swings a line of brilliant energy is much more interesting than the dope who just stands still and cracks a whip.

Some of the unique items my duelist had were:

Signet ring that created the effects of a heightened daze spell when striking a humanoid (as in a punch) and was a ring of evasion.

Boots of springing and striding that allowed water walking for 10 rounds/day.

Amulet of theatrics = Amulet of natural armor that also allowed the weared to make his cloak flutter when there was no breeze, could change the color of the wearer's eyes, could make the wearer's incisors appear to grow, could make the wearer's voice "boom" (like god from monte python) it gave a +2 to intimidate and bluff checks.

Dagger of Lizard Marsh = +1 Bane of lizardmen had a 15% chance of casting poison or contagion on anyone it struck.

Sling of the God's Wrath = +2 sling with 10% chance of casting a meteror swarm on the target struck.

that's just a few, hope it helps.

Well, it's not an item that you'd use in combat but what about owning various businesses? Shipping company? Relic hunters? Bardic colleges? Brothels? Casino? Your own adventuring guild? Your own Harper styled group? Or how about your own training academy.. of course they'd train folks in ways of the whip. ;)

A wall or display case filled with items that you've acquired using your whip tricks would be neat.

+1 Brilliant Energy Screaming Holy Wounding Whip Dagger
Are you certain the extra +4 would'nt make a difference? And why Holy? Is the character devout? Also, you should think higher than +5 for a weapon..Epic is serious business.

Also, if the character is somewhat paranoid..then invest in a Robe of Eyes. It'll be rather humorous the first time someone does sneak up on the character. :)

Sounds like youre on the wrong board CDW ... since you are more interested in STATS than STORY. Try the minmaxer board to get "effective stuff". Character development is more about the LIFE of a character than HIS STUFF.
