Okay, I thought I'd share an experience I had with my group this year.

I was playing a half-elf paladin, and another guy was playing a half-orc cleric. (Correction: a "bad-ass womanizing drunken battle cleric".) We were sitting around one day, discussing our characters' backgrounds, when he came up with the idea of our characters being brothers.

The story goes that our father, an elf, was a paladin, the leader of an order, and our mother was a human. Our characters' parents discovered him abandoned by his family because of his orc blood. He was raised in my characters' family as one of their own, and he eventually became a cleric.

Simple, I know, but establishing our characters' relationship as brothers added a ton of flavor to the game that wouldn't have been there otherwise. Plus, having spent at least a month in the plane of shadows and having seen his entire order (including his father) get slain by all sorts of unpleasant creatures, my character was a little insane.

Just something I thought I'd throw out there. Even little things here and there add a lot to roleplaying.

And what if your mother, after having been raped by an orc (producing the half-orc cleric), them married an elven warrior (producing the half-elf paladin)? Now you are really brothers.

Yea, but that might make them brothers on bad terms though. I'd play it where the father was the common blood in the brothers. Make the mothers an orc and an elf paladin and that the father wooed them at different times. This makes it very less likely that one of the brothers will dislike the other or have that tramatized feeling. "Yes, your father was the one who raped me, and your father was the one I loved" Doesn't always feel nice.

Or you can have a woman who married a civilized Orc and the orc ended up dying from say diease. Giving props for the half-orc to become a cleric. The woman then remarrys with the paladin.

Or you can kind of reverse the roles. Maybe woman marrys paladin, paladin goes on holy journey and gets killed. Woman then meets outcast Orc and both fall in love or what not.

All I'm really saying is the whole 'my mother was raped by an Orc' thing is clice.
