The setting is in a true swashbuckler style. So think about the east India companies, Pirates of the Caribbean and other film/books like it.

Side note: Sfacciato is Italian for Impudent which I freely translated as immodest and I think that’s quite suitable for the setting. So we begin our story:

Esther was born some 18 years ago in a large mansion back in the colony where her father lived. Her mother unfortunately died in childbirth which didn't strengthen the mother-daughter relationship. Her father Mr Lev Sfacciato on the other hand was very proud of his only daughter and spared no expense to raise her in the highest of fashion. This was also somewhat expected because Mr Sfacciato happened to own a shipping company with 4 ships currently sailing the spice routes between the motherland(*) and the colonies.
For a time things where good. Esther was being raised by a very skilled and very expensive governess who taught her table manners and of the position of the woman in the world. This meant that she should learn to marry someone wealthy and be subservient to him the rest of her life. This didn't go down all too well with Esther who by the age of ten was more interested in climbing trees, chasing pigs with the local children and having some good (but not too clean) wholesome fun. She frequently got disciplined for such unladylike behaviour and was forbidden to play with those children which only made it more enticing for Esther to sneak out whenever she could and ruin another frilly dress that her father bought. By the time she was 15 she had learned quite a few tricks, sneaking about the house and surroundings.

When she turned 16 however something wonderful happened, well her father called it wonderful, Esther didn't really approve of the marriage his father was trying to arrange so she did the only thing she could do and ran off. She went on board on one of her father’s ships and left to follow the sunset.
She spent the next two years on and off various ships and in and out of seedy ports and taverns learning about the real world and enjoying it a lot more.
She still writes her father often letting him know she is doing very well (Not omitting any of the nasty details) and that she is not interested in marrying anyone for the time being.

*)I don’t know the names of the various countries. Its best to think of one of the west-European nations like great Britain or the Netherlands.

IMHO, your spelling is not bad; but I'm french-canadian, I can't judge that too well!

Good background. I guess it is for a rogue character? She shoud be half a spoiled child, half an ingenious rogue. True thieves who are born in the street shouldn't trust her easily, always demanding she proove herself.

Yea Esther will be a spellthief which is basically a rogue with a gew additions.

Addition:
Her attitude towards the world will mostly be very carefree with a limited perspective on how her actions will have consequences. After all when she was still growing up at home the worst thing she would get is a severe scolding (with a spanish reed) from her father or governess. And for the rest she's going to be a very fun-loving girl who might be just a tad lazy when it comes to chores(adventures) she doesn't like.
