I'm considering to start playing an evil character and I've just read (all/most) the threads here about evil character. My old character just died last night at lvl4 and my other 3 party members are NG, CN, LN in a good campaign.

I don't want to play CE its just much of a 'killer'. I want to be a subtle (sp?) evil character so probably LE, maybe NE if i play a rogue.

A lot of ppl in the other threads said that evil doesn't automatically mean killer and that there are more subtle way of playing. There are, however, few posts explaining or giving good examples these subltes evils. What I would like to know is how do you play subtle evil in a good campaign. I'm not looking for if i should or shouldn't play an evil character or an argument if it should be allowed (which always seems the happen in the other threads). Just some good examples and based on these I can decided if i think it worth the energy to play evil.

Thanks in advance for all ur replies (i hope:rolleyes: )

Btw the alingment of the other characters are just a guess, because we don't get to see the other persons character sheet. Its all down to role-playing.

I've got one other question/request. Could you pls state races/ class and which alingment ur character is.

How funny, I am actually in the same situation (level 4 and everyone is the same or similar alignments, though I bet your character didn't die because of a kick in the nuts)

At the time I was playing a character with a split personality. one side was a LG monk, the other was a LE samurai. The evil side was covetous, sort of like a dragon, and lived for treasure. His greed drove him to do anything to further his wealth, especially underhandedness and murder. He was rather smart, and manipulated things in fun ways, such as using forgery to forge a withdrawal slip for his bank account (yes this world had banks, not very good/safe ones, but backs, just no technology). Greed is a lesser evil, and could be a character motivator. From the wizard angle, a Necromancer is a prime example of a subtle evil. Using undead is considered evil, but It's much more excusable than say, devouring the souls of millions of innocent children and constructing a castle from their bones and organs.

I am starting to play into a campain where my caracter is a raider. If this is not considered evil, I wounder what it is. I am joining a group ( of 2 caracter , lol) One is barbarian and the other is a Soul Mage ( new class in the campain setting intitled Kinel, visit the thread if you're interested) There is no aligment in this CS but the barbarian could be considered TN and the Soul Mage NE. I know I am not in the same situation, but you can still try to role-play you're caracter and make him evolve from evil to neutral.

What are the classes of the other players?
What is interesting you in playing an evil caracter?

The other characters are (i think) a NG Elven Ranger, LN Gnome Conjurer, CN Half Ogre/Human Fighter/with at least one level barbarian.

I'm considering a rogue, cleric or maybe a monk. I've been playing (A)D&D on and off for 10 yrs now and just started again after a 2 yrs break. The reason i want to (maybe) play an evil character is for the role-play challenge, but i'm having trouble finding the 'right' subtle! evil character for me. Thats y i'm asking u all what are your way of playing subtle!!! evil characters. If it comes down to being a killer or someone who has no trouble killing anyone I won't start an evil character. It just that i think one can be evil and still hate killing, but i haven't found it yet. At least not one i like. So pls help

Well, here are some ideas I thought of

Monk, LE

He has a great honour code. Protects children from harm. Seeks justice, but only the one that matters.( Ex: he wont let come to harm a thief that stole some bread to survive one more day. )He breaks the neck of ppl who disrespect his code, kill the wounded so that his honour is safe, etc.

Cleric, LE

Fallower of an evil deity or even a good deity that demands him to purge the country lands. His methods of purging are disgusting, he kills ppl and revive them or not... or simply call undeads

Rogue, NE

The Collecter or master of pick-pocket: This rogue is tempted to take all he sees. He collects any objects, from the simple stamps to the rare artifacts. (Ex: Everytime he enters a room, he'll get out of it with a new possession.)

Another Rogue ( and my favorite ), NE

The Trickster or trapmaster: this rogue walks the streets waiting for ppl to get in his traps, waiting for them to get angry, mad at him. His goal in life is to pull pranks on everyone by setting multiple traps. He likes to get in troubles an enjoy trying to get out of it.

Finally, I have an ultimate question: what is the campain setting that your PC will be in?

You should visit my thread: A Goblin's Diary, it might interest you.

Sutble evil can be the dominator. If psionics are allowed, a Telepath is great for sutble evil (LE). He sows seeds of distrust, and bends things in his favor with mental control. I played such a character, was a blast 'till I got a lot of the other players killed.

For a different kind of evil, try NE druid. The druid could wish to purge the lands of all things unnatural. I am currently playing a CN druid with similar goals, but not to the point of being evil.

You could also be a NE or LE sorcerer (or wizard) who uses mostly spells from the enchantment school. Then take Willbender prestige class from Tome and Blood. This is a more subtle evil, with mind games and trickery.

Remember, don't let the other members of the party know your evil, try to keep it secret for as long as possible.

Yep, thats excatly why i want subtle evil and not someone who kills.

Thanks for the replies so far, but more are always welcome and appriciated!

subtle evil can easily mistaken for selfish players or poor role-players. Your biggest problem is eventually they will put two and two together and then what???

Do you betray them? Do you kill them? Run away?

This is a party killer. My advice... don't do it!!

for future reference Beavis thats not the kind of advice he was looking for...

You might be evil but you can still grow used to the stench of your party
they might end up the victims of your plot at some stage, but the attachment causes you to falter when the time comes to do away with them, then you can become reformed,

hell a split personality makes for a subtle evil have to personalities kinda like fight club if u haven't seen it watch it now!!! then read the book, i liked the book better.
anyways thats my thoughts

Right now i'm still doubtful if i'm going to play an evil character. Just can't seem to get the right flavour for a character. The few that i am considering at the moment are

NE Rogue, who will steal from anyone (no matter how poor) but doesn't kill for it because he want to only rely on his skills. Probably be Elf or Drow considering they only need 4 hrs of rest so he can sneaks of the other 4 hrs his party is resting. (One problem is that there is another elf)

NE Melee character maybe even Physic Warrior who is a mercenary. He has been hired to kill the person the rest of the party is trying to rescue

LE Cleric kind of the same story as the melee character except his god sent him. Although I'm thinking more along lines of use cure instead of inflict. Why couldn't an evil cleric cure ppl (ableit for money)? Maybe a neutral cleric would be better in this case?

Of course what ever i decide i'll 1st get the constent of the DM because he'll need to change a few thing in his campaign.

Hey!

Why don't you try a dwarven rogue who steal for his own greed. He could be very selffish and a good trader. He could still sneak during sleeping time.

You said you wanted a evil caracter to make something different. Well I suggest that you take a class/race mix that doesn't realy fit with each other, on top of the evil side of your caracter.

Not quite following you. What do you mean?

Well I meant that some races have favorite classes and more common classes used by them. EX: elves have wizards as favorite class and it is common to see an elven bard or druid. dwarves have fighter as favorite class and it is common to see cleric of Moradin among them. Halfling rogue and Half-orc barbarian are also good examples of really common race/class mix among the PCs. I encourage you to play an unusual Race/class mix and to set him an evil aligment. My example was a dwarven rogue, but it could also be a halfling barbarian or an Half-orc bard. Anything is possible and try to impress your DM, he is propably tired of playing with elves PCs ( because everyone wants to play a freaking elf ) You can also propose him to play a creature from the MM as goblin or lizardfolk.

glad to be of some help

Haha kind of reminds me of i time i was a gnome Bardbarian (Bard/Barbarian).

I understand what u mean, but it will make roleplaying even harder :smirk:

Then again it might distract them from the 'evil' part

Oke i've decided that i'm definitly going to play an evil character and i have narrowed my choices down to 2 classes

NE Rogue, but i'm not sure yet which race Drow, Air Genasi the +2 dex and int is just too tempting. Or maybe Ghostwise Halfling (speak without sound :D) or a tiefling.

LE Physic Warrior Strongheart Halfing (1 extra feat). Not sure of this yet because I don't have a Psionic Handbook so i'll need to look a few things up 1st.

I have played a Chaotic Neutral Teifling rogue. (should change him to neutral evil soon)

He is a spymaster and always goes by a false name and occupation. When we started the campaign he was a gem trader by face and a guild thief that would always skim a buck where he could (take money from dead guards in the middle of combat). Half the party thinks that he is evil because he prefers to kill his prey in the dark (darkness spell like ability + blindfighting + high listen, now blindsight from Dungeon Delver) and aways goes by a false name (the DM even forgot his man a couple times).

As the campaign progressed we ended up in the underdark blackmailing a drow house (think noble house) into helping us get back to the surface. While there, he got some training in perform(body) where you make a person scream to the sounds of an orchestra (this really screwed them up).

His one saving grace is that he is infinitely loyal to a contract, and becuase he was hired to escort and help the party out he never acts against them (except once where he disintegrated a door, but it was justified  )

Hope the experience helps you,

Ochiix

PS do not forget evil people do not bite the hand that feeds and protects them, just tries to control it

In my opinion, the greatest evil class ever the Neutral Evil aladin variant known as the Corrupter.

The Corrupter is found in Dragon Magazine.

This class gives you alot of great roleplaying options. THe best part is, the Corrupter has no alignment restrictions when it comes to associates and is free to pretend to be any alignment or have any diety they want.

And they also get the greatest spell ever. Fallen Soul. It basically makes good people want to become evil and it keeps evil people evil. IT gives you bonus to your stats temporarily when you commit evil acts and perm takes away stats when you do good. It is great.

Any race is good for this...but if you happen to become a Vampire, it gets really really fun.

I just wanted to type a little about how to make being the evil character fun for the rest of your party.

-As the sole evil in your party you serve a role much like the bumbling mage or kender rogue. You're like an evil stress reliever. For example, The BBEG wizard has thumbed his nose at the party by paying off the town guards and escaping.

Party: "Oh that sure is crumby!"
You: "Yea, well you can't win them all *evil grin*
Party: *watches evil pc carefully, wary of his unnaturally easy-going attitude*

Moments later the wheels of the carriage the wizard is riding away in fall off and the resulting wreck kills/injures the wizard and his cohorts.

It's like a type of therapy.

-Secondly make the party love you for being evil. Don't be rob from your party, don't kill them in their sleep. If you're LE or NE you are a professional and can gain much more by cooperating with them. When someone attacks your party your reaction should be as follows
1. Laugh because you snuck in their house the previous night replaced their magic weapons with fakes.
2. Laugh after backstabbing/magic missiling/flamestriking the BBEG mid-speech.
3. Laugh as you divvy up the loot.

-Chances are if you're traveling with the party it's for profit. MOST adventures travel together because it's better to travel in groups, this goes double for you. Don't do anything to jeapordize that extrememly profitable relationship.

I'm playing a Fey'ri Lasher in a group of good PCs. Because of the Fey'ri's ability to alter self at will, the entire party thinks he is an Avarial

He is going to use his abilities like Suggestion on the sly, in the middle of conversation with the NPCs and I have a signal that I give the DM so that he knows to take it into account.

He is NE

So, Gilhaelith, how is your caracter evolving for now?

I'm curious to know how you roleplay in this good group
