So I want to play my Evil Rogue Assassin from my Sneaky little... (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=6905735#post6905735) thread in a Chaotic Neutral to possibly Lawful Good campaign. Is this discription of her character possible/viable?

She will be a Whisper Gnome. Being dedictated to silence and hiding, she's very social (which might be better in this case). We may have a Paladin in the group, so these two will most likely not be interacting or helping each other much, if at all. Our cleric will be either Neutral or Neutral Good. I want to tone down the Core discriptions of Chaotic Evil. On the chaotic side, she will have no order or care for being told what to do, but travels willingly with the party for her own benefits. She is evil simply because of the way she deals with people she meets. If she needs something from someone, she decides whether to simply steal it and risk being caught, or just kill them outright. She would however, be willing to let another party member talk into an arrangement, although she would not take part in it, and be suspicious and untrusting. She will be timid in talking to strangers, rarely coming out of the shadows and revealing herself. You could say her philosophy is... "Better not to be seen, nor heard. What they don't know will probably kill them..." She does not like to battle, and typically stays out of a fight until she can eliminate a threat with a death attack. She would rather "deal" with the situation before a battle breaks out. If she can quickly end a forseen confrontation, she does so ruthlessly. Basically, he shows tendencies toward evil acts but still contributes to the party as needed.

I'm hoping this slightly toned down interpretation of Chaotic Evil can play well if we have a Paladin in the group. What do you all think?

I think its hard to play anything evil with a good paladin or cleric in the group. Should make for some interesting roleplaying but will be a strain on the group. I hope it all works out, it just has never for myself as the moral code of the good players clashes too much with the evil characters. =/

Hey gang,

I played a borederline evil wizard in a group of otherwise all good characters, and it worked out alright. I think the key was for my character to realise that performing good deeds didn't really bother her. Sure, fighting off some hobgoblins to rescue some dwarven miners sounds like a good act, but thats assuming that one's motivation is to rescue innocents. For my wizard it was a chance to earn reward money, to test her spells (particularly the cruel and/or deadly ones) on living, moving targets, and to generally build up a positive, goodly reputation.

Evil characters don't have to be psychopaths, even the chaotic ones. They don't have to scoff at good deeds, or perform evil deeds for the sake of being evil. Not all lawful-good characters are paladins, and not all chaotic evil characters are blackguards. You can be evil in moderation, and I even advise it.

Also, be sure to add some redeeming qualities to your character. She may be genuinely pleasant and charismatic and she may be a loyal (if not always dependable) friend. Its fun to blur the line between good and evil, vengence and justice, love and lust and all that great stuff.

i agree with gingerbread guy up here....i dont think it's neccesairy for evil and good to clash at every turn..aslong as you have your motives you can perform" good " deeds....

I've played a neutral evil rogue, i was the biggest and most selfish guy in town, in a good - neutral aligned party and i got along fine...i coooperated with them and they on their turn thought of me as a good-guy who didnt always keep his word and always claimed the biggest share of the treasure....As all badguys I had my own hidden agenda to assasinate one of the party members superiors..and what better way to walk myself into his well guarded keep than by walking in hand in hand with one of his most loyal followers?...

All went well untill the point i killed his master....and got damn near to taking them all out...but i eventually lost to those "goody-2shoes..." *sigh* what a shame...

I think I good way to integrate an evil character into a primarily good group if a Paladin or Cleric were involved, would be like this:

Have the evil character be released into the custody of said lawful character, so that the evil character can better conform to the standard "goodness" of society. Have an enchantment of some kind be put on the evil character, thusly preventing he or she from harming or leaving the lawful character. To release the enchantment, the evil character must put him or herself on the line to save someone in the party, or do something good willingly, or whatever else the DM deems appropriate.

I may be in luck! It sounds like I won't have any LG characters to work around, as long as our Dwarven Defender isn't Good... I know he'll have to be Lawful at least. Maybe I can convince the entire party to go evil  Right now we have 5 campaigns going, 3 of which we play regularly, and soon to be starting 2 more, and we have NEVER played an evil campaign. I think it would fun...
