Hi. I'm about to begin a Eberron campaign, and I had decided on a gnome illusionist as my character ( For such a common Archetype, I have never played it before).

Now , my DM has given me the challenge of playing an evil alignment. At first I was skeptical if it could work, but given Eberron's take on the gnomish culture (scheming, deceptive , subtle) I began to see a possible charcter concept.

An illusionist who uses magic and information to get what he wants. Maybe he adventures as practice for his magical skills, and a chance to find future oppertunity.

Perhaps you people here on the board can help me flesh it out. Feel free to ignore my ideas, and come up with any cool ideas for an evil gnome illusionist.

hmm. Do you already know from where he is? One of the five (or now four) nations?

Your background must not nescessarily reflect your evil nature. A relatively typical (if not stereotypical) background was that he has studied in a great college - the Morgrave University in Sharn or the University of Wynarn in Fairhaven.
Maybe he quitted studying because he was dissatisfied with being limited in his studies about the shadows. Maybe he learned to know someone who slowly lead him to being evil while he wasn't before. Or someone there approached him with a chance for adventures that he couldn't resist.
The campaign setting also says that there were a quite large number of goblinoid students in the Wynarn University, maybe there is a possible approach.

If he didn't study he may have been travelling to explore the world, earning a few coins here and there in rural areas with the minor spells he has. Then he found new ways to steel peoples money and trick or distract the guards with his spells.

Or he is affiliated with a certain organization... maybe he is a survivor from Cyre, or a decendant and his lust for revenge has taken over him, believing everyone is guilty for the Mourning. Thus he tries to make folks nightmares come true with his illusions and drive them slowly to madness while hoping to get some information about what actually happened or how deep the guilt of the particular individual is and how he should punish it.
