| Jastra of the clawed hand11-05-05, 10:40 AM | For a game next weekend, I have tried my hands at an evil character. She's a CE gnome bard who will later take levels in the Fiend-Blooded PrC ( Heroes of Horror). We'll play in the Forgotten Realms and she'll probably be from Amn ( or the Silver Marches). So far, I have thought up a bit of background but I might need some help and tips to create a remarkable and memorable character. Her grandfather was a demon, but she hasn't been so lucky as to gain direct benefits from her heritage. But she knows of it and thus wanders, trying to find a way to unlock her fiendish legacy and use the power for herself. She ( so far I haven't found appropriate names for her) likes influencing people, thus getting what she wants. Only that, power aside, I haven't yet found out what it might be. While she can be incredibly cruel, this always serves a purpose - not that she has any scruples, no, not at all, but getting caught and being hanged (and there is reason for that) does not fit with her other future plans. That's about it. Any comments and/or suggestions would be much appreciated ;) |

Since the only area of particular uncertainty I could notice in your post was about what she wants, I think I'll focus on that. The most obvious thing she wants is personal power over others. Maybe she revels in the power she can exert over others; if she can't do it by raw force of personality, an enchantment spell would certainly do in a pinch. She might be a little bit of a tease as well, to back this up. On that note, maybe make her have certain levels she "won't stoop to"- for example, she has no qualms about a little seduction to get someone under control, but she absolutely despises male gnomes and won't attempt the same against them (just a thought). |

She tips very well at inns/taverns etc, but she always complains and sends something back at least once (maybe some ranks in profession - cook or innkeeper), but she does love to cook and will always offer to show the help what they can do better. She once started a brothel and had to leave that town, because the powers-that-be discovered here involvment in narcotics... plus she knew too much about their kinks. She spends a good deal of time studying Elven stories and high-epic poems to impress the Elf-phile humans. Blackmail and addiction work better than pure charm. |

Check your local PBS station or the BBC cable station, if you are lucky enough to have it- I don't but have come across it while traveling. Other recommended personalities include George MacDonald Fraiser's Flashman series of books. While neither character is exactly sinister, they are both vain, shallow, greedy and arrogant. The Flashman series is excellent at showing how to be an evil "hero" type. Both are good example of how to suck-up to power and try to gain some for your own use. |
