Hi,

At the moment i play in a quite strange D&D campaine whit a lot of planar plots involved. And reacently out group splited, two characters traveled to Sigil (unwillingly) and the rest stayed at another plane. So the characters that were sent away made new characters that where sent to aid the group that stayed and im about to make a character that will be sent to aid the two who where forced to Sigil. Now i am quite free to do as i like as long i can show my storyteler wher the classes feats and so on is published. And so far i have hade quite a lot of ideas where to start but one idea that i found quite amusing was to make a character who is quite unwilling to aid the others (well it's good if he can help out and dose stick around otherwise i have to make a new character again, but anyway). So have one basic idea and i thought i post here to se if you could help me work out the rest.

Race: Human probably but anything will work
Alignement: either chaotic or evil (or both) Hell i don't like the idea of running others errands but what can i do (he is forced in some way).
Class: ??? First i was thinking warlock or hexblade but i thoguht i would listen to others advice first.
Stats: this is what i rolled: 14, 14, 15, 16, 16, 17

Now i know my GM and he like to do evil plots and i was thinking of giving him a hand in that... i was thinking of taking the "Devil Bloodline" (Major) in unearthed arcana... (it could give a reason why the character feel "forced" to help the group). If i use it i probably can leave it open why a Devil would like to help them (but the GM would have a ground to start from.)

So what do we have, well a person who realize (quite young) that he is not quite like everyone else, he probalby get isolated and spiteful against "the other children" but when he grows up he comes to realise his "dark past" and try to understand his family linage...(and that goes to hell "so to say") and he somewhat mixed up whit really bad elements (devils)... now the devil he have served sends him to aid this litle group of others (why up to DM).

Now I only have to fill out everything to make him/her more interesting (and give some more nice plots to the GM to play with). Also possible class builds and so on...

what more can be interesting to know... hmmm.. well the two "main characters" im gona aid is a Halfling Ranger (ferfull combatant :P) and a Elf Druid...

hmmm... well thats it, im greatfull for any tips and ideas (both in the terms of "rules" (class feats and so on) and in tearms of nice backgroud ideas).

And finaly excuses if my English is bad, but i hope you can have patience with my faults :P

Perhaps play a character that is there to help, but doesnt want to be there to help. He constantly lets the others know that he feels he has better things to do/places to be than here with them.

What comes to mind is someone who is sent on an open ended quest by some sort of elder, so they gain maturity. ie:

"Your foolish and immature antic's have caused too much mischief over the years. Your being cast out into the world and are banished from your home until you can prove you have grown up/ gained a deeper understanding blah blah blah..." and so forth.

For obvious reasons, any sort of 'scoundrel' character would do really well here.

A few possibilities come to mind-

A Darfellan who is more interested in playing pranks and having fun than trying to help his race rebuild from the brink of distinction. Uses humour to cope with his current situation, elders sent him with the party when they passed through their town, hoping he would mature and possible be an asset to the village in the future (gaining resourses, allies ect)

A dwarf who is more interested in learning magics than he is in mining and close combat training. Considered lazy and a coward by most of the hardy dwarves, the king sends him along with the party to get rid of him (things go smoother without him around) and to possibly improve his magics (the king knows the character is smart, and can see the use in a magic user).

A prince/princess of some sort (race doesnt matter), all they do is lounge around the house, they dont even partake in politics. The king/queen charages the party with their childs protection as they send the character out into the real world to gain some 'character'. Hopes when they come back they will have gained a more productive view of the world, along with some respect and appreciation of their position.

Most of these characters would be chaotic neutral if not chaotic good.

Hope this helps a bit.

Peace

First, tnx for the answer...

Second: Yes a Scoundrel could work nice to... and you’re right about the "Perhaps play a character that is there to help, but doesn’t want to be there to help. “He constantly lets the others know that he feels he has better things to do/places to be than here with them." part. But i also want some kind of hook that makes it less possible for him to just walk away... if he’s chaotic why care about what the "elder" whom ever said... it would be great to find a more "binding" agreement (that was why i first thought of the devil part... you can not just walk out on a devil (unless you want really bad times of cause)). But some scoundrel concept could be nice, I doesn’t own the complete scoundrel (i have a friend that dose so I better check it out when im visiting him) but any good prestige classes that could work nice? (hmmm gnomes tends to be interesting tricksters)...

about your "possibilities":

The darfellan was nice but I don't think it would do me to much good in a planar campaign (unless we go to a plane of water)...

the dwarf concept was great to (but i play a dwarf psion in as the other character so... i want some variation (wizard is one but i would like to do something completely different).

The prince/princes part could do nice (even though it doesn’t need to be a prince or a princes just someone of high standing) i have to ask my GM if it could work out... it could be nice to play some laidback lazy hedonistic "bastard"

----

Chaotic neutral, maybe even good (s/he is not really a mean bastard just not used to be "pushed around" (as s/he sees it)... I also liked the part of "pranking/joking" to cope whit the situation... could be good if s/he comes from some really "horrible" background to...

Maybe one could mix a bit...

s/he is from some "high up" family, whit some kind of "dark side" to it (leave the exact nature to GM but hinting in the background story that something isn't right), and s/he have grown up whit this feeling the whole life refusing to partake in the family "politics" trying to escape the agony behind masks of "jokes and pranks" seeming to take nothing seriously (i feel someone quite sensitive here)... Now the family wants to harden their child to "make them capable of" taking over the "family business".. now we have these "new people in town" (and evil Halfling and his elf "follower" whom have "some kind of destiny (i don't know the GM dose) and because of the nature of the family (being diviners or whatever) they see numerous advantage to send their child there... 1) let him learn the "hard way" 2) even though s/he is a bit "chaotic" s/he still have some sense of "family honor" and could be a "unwilling spy" on these "new players in town".

hmm... this might be a god start... to make something interesting...

what kind of build could one make (I’m not necessary interested in “total” optimization but some basics, interesting feats that one could "build into" the background, possible developments and so on)..

And oh.. i forgot Im going to start as lvl 3 or 4

Here's an idea: an aristocrat character with draconic (or devilish?) blood, and he's the only one in his familly with draconic blood... Before the evidences, his mother tells she had an affair with a beautiful stranger, and that she regreets. To avoid his own humiliation, the father forgive her and and hide this secret.
But as you get older, it becomes more and more apparent, both physically and by the behavior. To ensure peace, your parents enthrust you to old adventuring friends.
That gives you many plot hooks:
- Why are you born different than your siblings?
- If you learn the truth, who is your real father?
- Perhaps a rival aristocratic familly suspect something, and sends spies against you?
- You could eventually be involved in political affairs, and even inherit a domain.

As for the classes, you could be an hexblade/dragon disciple, or a tiefling rogue (spellthief?)...

Wow, that was inspiring. So I wrote something based on that. First, feel free to correct my grammar I’m not to good at writing in English but I guess I should do it so I can share it whit you (and it also gives you an opportunity to come whit more ideas, in the end there might be a great character for more then me to use). Secondly some stats:

X (this is the work name for now)

Race: ? Maybe Human whit some bloodline (fiend, fey, dragon) or thifeling or some other good race to make him “stand out” from the rest of his family. (maby one should take some heritage feats instead?)
Class/es: I have to update this later but feel free to come whit advice.
Alignement: Chaotic Neutral (two reasons, first the other characters are “Neutral Evil” and “True Neutral” so even if a good character could be good for some balancing in alignment it could also become more problematic whit interaction. Secondly, Chaotic Neutral is nicer to work whit).

Personality/quirks: this need to be worked on, but I liked the idea of using pranks/jokes to cope whit “reality”. And the part about “complaining to the others “about being “forced” to work with them.

Basic: I use your background but I change this a bit: “To ensure peace, your parent’s entrust you to old adventuring friends.” The idea is great but Im not sure how the GM will introduce me to the others so its better to leave it whit a ”open ending”. All i know is that the others in the group was ”fooled” into a portal and just arrive in Sigil (and that’s where this character will be introduced, and the other characters have never been in Sigil so…). But i think the idea is nice, so i probably use it like this: After traveling whit those adventurers for a while they just get ”to tired” whit X so they decide to ”dump him” and one morning when he wakes up at the tavern (or whatever) where they stayed for the night the others are just gone (GM insert what happens next). So whats next? Well its time to write the actual background story in less formal ways:

X= the character
Y= X mother
Z= X father

Please excuse me but I got to ask
Are you only being nice
Because you want something
My fairy tale arrow pierces
Be careful how you respond
'Cause you'd not end up in this song
I never gave you an encouragement
And it's doing me in
Doing me in
Doing me in
Doing me in

The more you try to erase me
The more, the more
The more that I appear
Oh the more, the more
The more you try the eraser
The more, the more
The more that you appear

You know the answer so why do you ask
I am only being nice
Because I want someone, something
You're like a kitten with a ball of yarn

And it's doing me in
Doing me in
Doing me in
Doing me in

The more you try to erase me
The more, the more
The more that I appear
Oh the more, the more
The more I try to erase you
The more, the more
The more that you appear
No, you're wrong, you're wrong
You're wrong, you're wrong
You're wrong, you're wrong
You're wrong

Thom Yorke – The Eraser

? years before X was born

It was long past midnight but to the Nobles at the party it was a custom to stay up late just to show that they didn’t have a certain time they hade to wake up like the peasants and their servants. Both Y and Z hade visited the party but as usual Z had withdrawn from the ballroom to discuss some intricate plots with his allies (against his enemies) and Y had been left alone to entertain herself. She had already tried the myriad of dishes the host offered his guests, danced whit the most important of guests (and of cause the host himself), and discussed the latest plays and vogues with her friends. Now she was starting to get bored, and she really wanted to get out from the mansion so she told her friends and the host goodbye and walked towards the entrance hall. Just as she was to open the gate towards the street it slid open and she could se a most beautiful stranger on the other side. “Good evening Ma’am, I hope you’re not leaving because of me”, he smiled the most warm and charming smile Y ever hade seen, and she was a beauty so she hade seen many smiles in her life. She smiled back and whit a blush on her cheek she answered, “No, Noble Sir, I just found the party boring and was going for a walk. I don’t think I have seen you around or am I mistaken?” Another of the gentleman’s beautiful smiles and she felt when she was young and newly in love. “You are not mistaken, I’m new to this Beautiful Manor, but I and tonight’s host know each other since many years. Now my relation to the host is a most boring subject so let’s change, but before we do may I offer you company on your nightly walk?” Y wasn’t sure that it was a good idea but there was something, most exotic behind the gentleman and she wanted to find out more, and she wanted to get back at Z for always leaving her alone.

These parts need more work, but I don’t have time now…

Early years:

When X was born s/he was just like every other kid, ate slept the only difference was that s/he never cried. But whit time X and Y started to realize that something was not right,

(well this part could be a few, I think everything before s/he is sent to the family friends)

Sent away:

(This part is when s/he is sent away and what s/he dose during those years)

Left alone:

(Well as I said above they leave him/her alone and this ends something like “GM insert whats next” or “Action” or whatever)

Questions, questions always questions:

(This last part should be a summarized part of all the question s/he have about his past and so on…)

Well I try to write some more when I get time… feel free to submit your more ideas and correct the language :D

(and that’s where this character will be introduced, and the other characters have never been in Sigil so…). What if your "babysitting" adventuring company simply drop you through a portal to Sigil? You fall asleep one evening, all in peace to have bulky warriors and brillant wizards to defend you, you awake the next morning in Sigil... You suddenly have to defend yourself alone... Fortunately, you find unlikely allies, some other adventurers who had as much badluck as yourself!

Haha, thats nasty ... but beautiful... could do really well... and it gives a good reason to hang on to them even thoguh s/he despite them... "Hey i have more important things to do than to hang around you".. "why don't you leave then?" "hmmm...well.... ehh..." (thinking: **** really need help from these guys, i never admit it thoguh)... :D

This is starting to sound alot like the crew from Farscape.

None of them really like each other as friends but they are all bound together by a common threat (a stubborn peace keeper hot on their tails)

(In most cases) Each of them would love nothing more than to leave the other behind, but they know they stand a better chance of survival if they stick together.

Yeah... thats pretty much all i got...
