| GamerGeek702-20-07, 09:39 AM | Hello all, I've been a lurker, and rarely a poster, among the forums for a while now and i've got a dilemma i hope you can help me solve. I'll be playing a in homebrew world setting and i'm having a problem with coming up with a class and alignment for a character i've been kicking around in my head. We can only play from the PHB1 for classes and races, which i like cuz it simplifies things. It'll be lvl one, PrC are on a case by case basis when we qualify later. I've already decided to go with Human as my race. The game world is similar to our own during the 10th century. My character is from the Middle Eastern equivalent and is part of a small monastic order that are essentially assassins for the church of either Wee Jas or St.Cuthbert. The DM and i haven't come to a decision on which, but it looks like he's leaning heavy toward St Cuthbert. I don't want to play an Evil alignment as the game has a Paladin and a Cleric of Garl Glittergold. I'm trying to play the idea of he either doesn't have the stomach for assasination and has abandoned the order...or he's a bit older then the average 1st lvl PC, maybe middle age, and was once part of the order but left and been lazing about in a drunken stupor for a few years having fallen outta shape and has to "re-train his body" as he levels up again. anyway any ideas or advice to a class, rogue being obvious but maybe not the best, and alignment you guys could give based on the two "concepts" would be much appreciated. |

The alignment for the Rogue in 3.0/3.5 rules is any alignment, so if you're leaning more towards St. Cuthbert, then you'll probably wanna become either LG, LN, N, or NG and avoid the rest. Perhaps if he doesn't agree with the monastic order's line of work and how he in general does things he could become chaotic, but I'm not sure. As to the class, I'd say figure out what assassins of St. Cuthbert are most likely to go after (political enemies, enemies of the church, evil creatures of all types, etc). The reason I'm stating this is because a combination rogue/ranger (or if the DM allows it and if you'll be in large cities a large amount of time, you could do rogue/urban ranger instead). Simply take as the favored enemy humans or an organization (for urban ranger) and you'll have two-weapon fighting, which stacks nicely with sneak-attacking (as I've read on forums). Please do flesh the character out a bit more though, since you seem to have a good idea but simply need more help in the build. |
| GamerGeek702-21-07, 11:32 PM | thanks for the advice. I'm gonna see about the Urban ranger/rogue combo and probably going with the outta shape drunk who now has to re-learn his art. After talking with the DM i've decided on LN. Again thanks for the advice. |
| SwarthmoreDB02-22-07, 10:17 PM | Sure, please post up on what the final character concept that you and the DM chose. So what did you decide? |
| jeffseadot02-25-07, 02:03 AM | You could modify the "doesn't like killing" thing and elaborate on it a little more. For example, you could keep the part where he doesn't much care for killing, but you could throw in something where he's so loyal to his order that he will do whatever they tell him to (generally perform assassinations), whether he likes the job or not. Since you're leaning towards St. Cuthbert, I'd swap out the word "assassinate" with "execute." Your guy could be a bounty hunter, someone who carries out the law of the land, but outside of the law. |
