What are some of the funniest/ironic character names you have ever had?

One name I had for a bard character that a friend of mine and I could never stop laughing at, was Flop Doogan.

Still cracks me up.

I'll bite.

I'd been having some car trouble at the time, so one night my DM -the great friend he is- picked me up at work. It had been a pretty rough day and I was drained. Conversation kept jumping between work and D&D (he happens to work at the same business. Convenient, eh?). I didn't like the direction my character at the time was going in, RP-wise, so I started musing about rolling up another character (I have to admit one of my favorite things is making characters. I've managed to curb my addiction from constantly to once in a while or when neccesary).

Well, I happened to segue back work after that, but he didn't seem to catch it, giving me a funny look when I mentioned I was just suffering from 'Sheer Exhaustion'.

"What did you say your character's name was?"

And well folks, that's how 'Sherrick Josten' was born.... :D

Christopher Cross is a bad one when you give him his nickname.

'Ima' is the world's worst first name. Ima Vandal, Ima Rogue, and even more subtley: Ima Smith, Ima Fletcher... etc...

Sauces make for funny last names. Ortega, Ragu, whatever...

Cheese makes for amusing names. Wouldn't you like to be the Great Gouda? Lord Gorgonzola? Nice ring, no? Strangely, some cheese names are rather good. Affineur, Brimsen, Tyrolean, Beauvoorde, Prince-Jean, Saga, Bryndza... They sound appropriate... but they're cheese names. A private amusement, but a good one.

A truely Jr. High favorite from way back when was 'Heywood Jablome,' but we've moved on to much subtler things. Ironically, there is someone in my group who occasionally has a cheese-related name, and occasionally still has to crack, "Who cut the cheese?" in the occasional melee combat...

I mean come on, just look at my user name!

And for those of you who don't get it... Look at my name, then look in the PHB at the elven last names...

A friend of mine played a bard named Sir Lloyd of Webber. Another bard named Burr of Stickum (Fat Boys reference).
A different friend played Ris Crock a Black dwarf role played as Chris Rock. The same guy played a half orc named Lloyd Furbriches, "That's Lloyd with two L's. Furbriches with no L's."
I have some strange friends.

Gune (pronounced Goon)

My group has coming up with some pretty cool professional names for Chinese-style games. Recently one of my players made a character named "Giant King" Fei Gou. He was a halfling, and the name was derived from the last thing the player drank (Faygo). Incidentally, "Fei Gou" could also mean "Flying Dog," which is pretty funny in and of itself.

A friend of mines played a rogue named Baka. (I believe japanese for idiot)
He didnt know and would go about saying things like..
"Lets do this Baka style!"

He changed his name to Morik when he found out.

Well, there is the wizard named Cleric Fighter. Her family, a long line of warriors for whom the family profession became the epithet became the name, really wanted her to go into the curch of Heironeous as thanks for him protecting their ancestors in battle. So much that they similarly named her after her future profession.

And my friend's character, Thop. His full name is Look Thop Ouch, because that's what people say when they see him.

This is a really good story about one of my fellow player's characters. It might turn out to be a "you had to be there" thing, but I think you will enjoy it.

After this guy's dwarven fighter had died, he brought in his new character, a halfling rogue named Jack. I don't recall his last name, but it isn't important. Anyway, Jack had been in the group all of about 10 minutes in the dungeon we were in when his dwarf died (his new character was a Temple Raider of Olidammaro, so it made sense that we met him in the dungeon), when he decided to open a door without searching it for traps (a clever move for a rogue in a dungeon known to be trapped in many places). He opens the door, the DM rolls the giant stone block's attack roll (hitting), and rolls damage. Jack was soon called Flapjack, and for the next few sessions the DM made sure to mention we were served pancakes (well, he affectionately called them flapjacks) at inns for breakfast.

Another story concerns a name I reused many times. Another friend of mine's first character ever was named Grunt, the half-orc (he played Warcraft 3 a lot). Grunt was killed pretty quickly, and we left his dead body on a throne in the middle of an abandoned castle kind of place. I decided to name my Camel after him, Grunt II, which I lost to a tricky halfling. In later campaigns I've used the name for a heavy war horse (Grunt III), a brown bear animal companion (Grunt IV), and an insane Half-Orc barbarian who though he was a god and demanded respect (Grunt V, and it was an evil campaign so it was ok that he was crazy).

I'm usually DM so I haven't had very many stupid characters, but when one ex-pc was making his first PC he named it Oblivion, everyone thought it was so stupid, the ironic thing was he wrote the name in ink so he couldn't change it.

We have Meatshield the camel, so named because it has 10 more hit points than its low-level rogue owner. It gets confusing when we talk about the group's meat shields and then mention Meatshield.

We had a party who came across a new players PC in a bog. When they asked him what he could possibly be doing by himself in a bog, he replied that he was capturing bogfarts for spell components. From that moment on, he was known as Bogfart, and that campaign, which we return to every now and then is known as the Bogfart Campaign. I don't think anyone even knows what the Wizard's name actually was.

back when they had the old D&D games for Cmmodore 64 and whatnot...i had Pool of Radiance. In that game, you could give the characters a portrait, and pick a head and body...well i gave this guy a bald mans head, and a chicks body, and named him Transvesto. he kicked some serious butt :)

The group I play in got distracted one night and in coming up with character concepts, somebody brought up a kobold pirate. It sounded pretty stupid, we all laughed until our DM thought about calling him Scrote (after .... you know what), then we only laughed harder. :D Hence came our miniature - Scrote, the Kobold Pirate - which you can find only at Magnificent Egos. ;)

We normally play in my friend's rec room, and one time, while re-arranging the furniture, I suggested somebody lift the large chair they intended to move rather than sliding it, for fear of hooking the carpet. The DM heard my warning then looked at the carpet and said "That's berber. You can't hurt berber." We all laughed at that and have been saying it ever since. Needless to say, my next character will be named berber, because "you can't hurt berber."

I remain,

Funny you should mention cheeses.

One of the members of our group has a habit of naming his characters after various cheeses. Currently, we are adventuring with Gorgon Zola, dwarven wizard.

Fred. Fred the Archmage, as he liked to be called.

Fred was fond of swearing profusely and floridly, and ALWAYS had a meteor swarm prepared with which to pound the enemy. To top it off, he was the creator of a number of hilarious magic items such as what the other characters termed "The Wall of Many Mistakes", a magic item which, when something ran into it, imparted a random magical effect on the something:

Player: "I run flat out at the wall!"
DM: "You bounce off the wall at a 45-degree angle, shooting up into the air. When you land, you realize you are now a +1 Halfling."

We had a Favored Soul that would always get mad when we would refer to him as the cleric (standard name for the party healer). However, he named himself Kharic. He became Kharic the Cleric. Why he picked a name that rhymed with cleric, we'll never know.

Most of my favourite names are just backwards versions of celebrities, my own name is Quentin Tarantino backwards, I also have a Character called H'sav de Edepmats (Vash de Stampede).

First time my group played D&D we didn't take things to seriously, and our party consisted of:
Jesus Christ the Druid
Lenny the Bard
James Brown the black dwarven barbarian (!)
Hawke (pronounced Hawk) the Orc
Pygmy the halfling monk
and, I'm sorry to say, a Human monk called Bruce Lee :(

also, in a higher level campaign a player had a cohort called Quicktrigger Mcnigger (I doubt thats gonna make it through unfiltered).

also Kanukilme (Can you kill me) the lizardfolk fighter. When the wizard was getting slaughtered by about 5 or 6 barbed devils in melee combat he shouted the fighters name.... to which the devils replied with a resounding "yes"
Helmed Horror

yea... one of my gamming buddies couldn't think of a name so he took the name of the first thing he looked at.. a fellow gamer's shirt. It happened to have a small stitched outline of a man on a horse attempting to strike a small sphere with a mallet... Yes, his name is Ralph Lauren.

My little female gnome bard's name is Milwikikiritiki. After playing just one session she has many names already: Millie, Milwikdinges, Kiki, Minididididi, etc :)
Juan Moore

02-25-05, 03:18 PM
My favorite character to this day is Juan Moore... his trademark saying is "Everybody needs Juan Moore!"

The story behind this has its roots in 3.0 psionics. We have a house deity in Faerun named Rolk Flameraven who has a chosen for every type of psion, including a psychic warrior. I wanted to become a chosen eventually and so I was asking if he had room in his little club of chosens.

DM: He doesn't need another chosen...
Me: But he can always use one more... wait... that's it!
DM: ???
Me: I will be a Psychic Warrior... named JUAN MOORE! Because Flameraven will always need Juan Moore!
DM: :surrender

To this day, Juan has become not only the inside joke, but everyone's favorite Psy War.

My friend was going to play in his first DND game, and I, as the DM, helped him make his character; A Stone Genasai monk. He had everything statted out, we even went so far as to outline the monk's personality. My friend had decided the monk would be fairly stoic, but stern and thoughtful when called to action or words. He even stated that in reflection of the monk's elemental nature, he would be somewhat dense and unconcerned with humor.

When it came to the name, he struggled around a bit and couldn't settle on anything, so I jokingly suggested:

"How about Stud?"

To which he enthusiasticaly replied, "Yeah! Stud, um, Wolvermane. Awesome."

I think my favorite name was a Balor named Fippy. Our party would randomly yell out his name and **** him off. He was like a divination user.

In the Starwars game I GM, one of the players is an ex-senator, on the run from the Empire. So famous is he that he has to go everywhere in disguise, as one of his many personas.

So far, they've included:

Lord Twinky Longbottom,

Harold Analwish,

Brother Love,

Strangely Brown

Medium Dave

just to name a few.

...

I was going to describe the personas and costumes he made for each of them, but I realise that they all conjour up such amusing images by themselves, I don't actually need to.

As a DM I once made up the character Ronin Pringles (there was a tube of Pringles on the table and a glass with an advertisement for the movie Ronin)

One of my friends managed to come up with a name for a female Dwarven cleric that made me double over. It took weeks before I could hear it without laughing.

Brieka Catsmacker.

I could just see her in my mind holding a cougar by the tail and beating it against the cliffside.

Back in 2E Waterdeep, during an urban adventure full of plots and intrigues involving various thieves, the PCs were set to meet a contact that would provide them with more info and aid them in accomplishing thier goal. In the darkness of the Dock ward they waited in a secluded ally. When thier man showed up speaking Thieves Cant, they introduced themselves and he introduced himself. Now I don't know exactly why but I choked while DMing that mysterious meeting, and in that tense moment, in the backways of the City of Splendors, my players met the assassin, Bob the Stealthy.

My current characters name is a combonation of Oui Gon Djinn (the Jedi Master) and my name (Keegan) which evidently makes him Key Gon Djinn. A friend of mine named his druid Elnose which soon got the nick name El Nose, which is Spanish for The Nose, for thouse of you that remember Chris Fraley. We also had a half orc named Gaul, a Hafling named Doug Underhill.

My brother took over a character in a campaign that was named 'Piet'.
Now, we live in holland and overhere Piet is the equivilant of John Doe, so to speak. To have a mighty wizard simply named Piet is just hilarious.
After the campaign became more serious the player changed the name to a more suiting name, 'Mere-istar'.

I think the Hellerman novel Catch 22 has one of the best "funny" names ever, one that I think I'm going to borrow for my next chary. A military man from a military family.

We had a player join our campaign who for the life of him couldn't think of a name, not even Bob or Steve or something simple. So the DM grabbed a dictionary and randomly picked out two words. Thus was born "Cluck Panel". We ended up giving dictionary names to everyone including:

Ketchup Pit
Love-Making Sirloin
Confection Miscarriage
Density Clubfoot

and numerous other gems.

Some personal favorites from me and my group;

Killia Witknife (Kill ya with knife... completely coincidental!)

Humongous Brute, the gnomish rogue

Slide "Sideways" Downs

Chuck the Dwarf (actually just a short human); when first introduced, he was in fact chucked through a window only moments later :)

Two-Gods-Cursed-Birth, a barbarian from a tribe whose names were derived from either their looks or incidents at birth. Charisma of 5.

Cow-eating-hat, another from the same tribe (describing the midwife's unfortunate run-in with a hungry cow while wearing a straw hat)

Woody Chuck chuckwood, the philosopher (often called If A Woody Chuck could Chuckwood)

We had a bladesinger named Zalabar back in our 2e days (all of five years ago), who was typically called "Salad Bar."

Other character names from the same player:

Garath Paladin and later Holy Liberator (after conversion) named Kalamar. He picked this name a good two years before the 'Kingdoms of Kalamar" setting was released.

And back in middle school, a wizard named Merlin (yes, Merlin), who when in trouble with the law, claimed to be someone else:

"What do you mean Merlin? I'm not Merlin. I'm his brother...Burlin!"

My longest running character is a nameless elven wizard (originally from Athas) who only speaks to cast his spells. After 8 years of existence, I still haven't come up with a name for him, so I wound up creating a backstory to explain why he goes by his nickname, Silence.

None of these, however, beat the three dwarven NPCs from a Darksun module we once played, The Hurly Burly Brothers. :D

I have a player who named his goblin rogue Gossip, which was not only cute but very appropriate. Since we're not native (english) speakers we are aware of the meaning but it still sounds like a real name.

The same player brought up the idea to name a dwarf after beer brands.
It was actually fun to create names like Tuborg Warsteiner or Binding Becks.

I was helping a couple of friends of mine to create characters for a campaign i'll be running this summer, and one of them was looking through the armour section of the PHB, and said to the other "You should call your character Don Hastily". And he did.

Then there was a one-off session with Tullgorm the Fighter. Usually called Tull, because he was gormless. i think we also had a wizard called Presto. People were always keen to get his attention ("hey, presto!")

For me it's a tie between Zook, the gnome, and Patches O'hoolihan, the dwarf fighter.

hehe, one of my players always has a difficulty choosing names, so when he was asked for his name and couldn't give one, we had him look around the room, using what first came to mind.

he was named Zeyloon Thee for that campaign...

we have a player who always names his character after what ever he happens to be eating or drinking at the time. the most famous of these was of course Foster Carling, a monk i bet you can guess the PrC he went for :D

A friend and I were once discussing a character idea involving a halfling rogue with a few levels in barbarian that didn't know about his 'rage self', leading to such name suggestions as Lou Ferrigno and Two-Minds, but the best came after he suggested 'Conan the Halfling' when I made it: Coh Nan, who refers to himself as Coh normally, but as Nan while raging (Nan smash!).

I like names that are simple and make sense, I tend to forget them other wise. So when I created a soulknife pyroknetiscist, I had only one option: Pyros. :) The best part was writing the backround for how he got that name.

Completely not D&D related, but I have a World of Warcraft character named Liuceijya, which of course is near impossible to spell. Now, most of my D&D buddies play WoW as well, and one of them runs the guild I'm in. The Guildmaster has therefore dubbed me Juice the Paladin. :D

And this one D&D related... I tried running a module with a couple of 12-year-olds (dumb mistake of the century for various reasons) and one kid named his half-Orc Barbarian Beuf Stroginouph. :D

And finally... one of these days I want to name a mind flayer Kahl'i-marr'ii... :P

I don't know if this counts, but my sorcerer is going to pick up mindrape from the BoVD and use it to change peoples' names around. For example, I'm thinking of changing the dwarf's name to Snarf Blatt McVomit or somesuch, since the player actually named one of his Dwarf clerics that at one point. The more entertaining one, of course, is changing the paladin's name so that he introduces himself to the king as " :censored: me hard and call me Shirley."

Ah, you gotta love mindrape.

I originally named my human male ranger Lúthien, from J.R.R. Tolkien's story of Lúthien and Beren. At the time, I had not read the Silmarillion in a while, and thought Lúthien was the man... alas, it's the elf princess and the name means "enchantress!" :embarrass

Having no interest in a decidedly manly ranger named "enchantress," I did a bit of research into the linguistics of Tolkien's old elvish. I changed the name to Lúthion, with an 'o', to make it masculine as in "enchanter." That way, nobody knew the difference, as both forms are pronounced similarly. :)

I've been thinking of adding a sorceror level or two, to give his name personal meaning...

there's this one guy in our group who, due to selfishness, wound up with a curse that made him amnesiac whenever his hp went below zero, using the bleeding rules, he's a rogue, and doesn't know how to keep alive, so, almost after every battle, he has a new name, dubbed by one of the players. the last two were "bob" and "gary", but we've had oher, more exotic ones such as "sunshine boy the doom bringer".

Buttonwillow McKittrick
Shafter Wasco
(these are all names of towns seen on signs as you drive up I-5 in California--in that order!)

Fred Mayhem (female barbarian. Fred is short for Winifred)

Mold Lamprey (A new player was having trouble coming up with a name and his brother got impatient and flipped through the AD&D Monster Manual. I used a similar technique to come up with Mordrak from the old Deities and Demigods [from Mordred and Roofdrak], but he ended up being Mordra after being reincarnated as a woman)

Lemmie

Driftwood

Chast Markwiss (so named to make fun of another player's pronunciation of the words "chaste" and "marquis".

Justin Kaiss (no, not a real character, but I like it) :P

I have a wizard with the name Terra Ruth Ursula Evelyn Strike.

She's a diviner, naturally.

Of course, having this horrible given name fills her with shame, so she generally makes herself known by the name Tsecni, a name she picked herself as "nicely inconspicuous" when she ran away from home to start her adventuring life. She was wrong, but for some reason no one is willing to call her on it.

Well, I did a superhero RPG once that a friend of mine went by the name "Capt. Jerko." Not very ironic, but I do love the name.

back when they had the old D&D games for Cmmodore 64 and whatnot...i had Pool of Radiance. In that game, you could give the characters a portrait, and pick a head and body...well i gave this guy a bald mans head, and a chicks body, and named him Transvesto.

*LMAO* That's the best one I've read yet.

Mine's not that good, but here it goes:

In the campaign I'm currently playing in, all the characters have serious and "realistic" names. Elven names, and half-orc names...and then my character's name: Fred Jones...that's it; just Fred Jones. Fred Jones bought a pet monkey in Amn, which he named BANGOR THE ENFORCER (pronounced Bang-gore, not Banger!). Fred then trained Bangor to fight. When the monkey hits, it hits for one point of damage! When Bangor criticals, it's TWO points of damage...yee-haw! Yeah, Bangor's a real "enforcer"...quite the asskicker! *LOL*
