Garehh Ashwing was never interested in the normal hobbies for an Elf, though he was rather intelligent. Singing, poetry, lore, and magic (though he respected it's might) never caught his attention. He was still reasonably skilled at dancing, but it still never consumed his interest. What he was absorbed in was war. Specifically, the nature of a person's mind after they waged war. Even the elves were always changed by war, to say nothing of the other races.

Garehh (who preferred to be known as Ashwing), was concerned for the mental he would also gain if he went to war, and sought out any who could teach him to spare his mind from war. He traveled from teacher to teacher, over far distances, who all praised his intelligence and elegant style of swordsmanship (honed from his skill at dancing, even though he had not seen true combat), but who could not teach him what he wanted.

Finally, in a forest that was ironically close to his home, Ashwing found something close to what he sought. A so called "wild" elf taught him a meditation technique that was similar to the elf trance that replaced sleep, but functioned in battle, allowing to user to clear his mind, stopping the horrors of war from affecting him/her.

Ashwing, being as intelligent as he was, improved upon this, and his version of the technique allowed a user to focus their muscles and might, which increased strength, detach oneself from pain, and even guard ones sanity from things that would attack it. However, this had a few disadvantages: for one, Ashwing could only force himself into this "trance" with effort, two, the serenity that the trance put him in was distracting, allowing him to use only the most crude skills he had, and disadvantage three, the trance was tiring to use.

Still, Ashwing and his teacher were both impressed by the improvements he made, and Ashwing desired to create a school to teach this powerful ability to others. However, he did not have money. His teacher recommended that he become an adventurer, as it seemed that those "types" became rich and powerful often. Additionally, he could further hone his skills in true combat. So, Ashwing set out to become an adventurer.

I'd like to see the attributes for this guy, based on the backstory I'd have to say at least Int 13.

At the moment, he doesn't have any. I just created him on a whim, not using him in any games for now. Really, I just put him up so people could comment and critque him. But yeah, I'll probably try to put his Int high, and his Dex. Not so much Con or Str, but fairly good Wisdom. Charisma will be higher then most barbarians, but not too high, I'm keeping that for Int and Dex.

Keeping with his "elegant dancing barbarian" theme, he's probably going to have Weapon Finesse for his first feat, and ranks in Tumble.

Sorry for the double-post, but I wanted to bump it.

So, is my character fine? He seems sort of bland to me, but I created him, so I'd like some feedback that isn't me.

although you would give him a Barbarian class, i would multiclass to Monk for roleplay feeling. he seems to be very lawfull to be able to master such an art of 'rage'. as you write it, you're controlling the uncontrollable...

i would probably make him a bit distant as he's always in some kind of trance, just my personal idea. probably reacting to only half the sentinces that are said (could cause some interesting situations).

it would suite him to have some ranks in knowledge(histroy) to show some study in wars of the land.

his passion of war can be seen though the fact that he tries to educate everyone around him about fighting. he could start discussions with wizards about the lack of fighting and would like to analyze the fight after every battle he is in. maybe he keeps a journal with combat tactics he has seen other perform.

anyway... just some ideas to make you think ;)

You might check out the whirling frenzy barbarian replacement ability in I think cityscape. It focuses more on dexterity than strength and might fit a little better with the theme.

I would have him black out when he goes into this trance and be unaware of what happened when he was in it. As he uses the ability more often, he finds himself blacking out sometimes even when he isn't using the ability.

Which can later lead to a quest to find away to regain control of himself.
