| HappyPants11-10-06, 08:31 PM | My group is going to start playing a new game with new characters and since I am the veteran among the group I usually play whatever class we need. That isn't to say that I don't have fun and put my own twist on things. Anyway, this time around I had an idea for a character that would be great fun to play but I don't know exactly how I should build him. The idea is that my character is (or thinks) that he is a cleric. His chosen God however is a rock that he keeps in his backpack. He prays to it and takes care of the rock and talks to it to decide important decisions. He's pretty much crazy as hell. Oh, and he's scared of the dark. I haven't talked to our DM yet, but I wanted to hear from you all first. Is there any chance that he can actually be a cleric? The rock isn't a god, but he believes it is. Second, if there isn't a chance of that what class do you think might work out with this gimick? I'm sure almost any class can be crazy and think that they are a cleric, but the more ideas the better. So if you have any suggestions or ideas that you can contribute would be great. Thanks. |

A character in one of my previous groups had it, and always kept us guessing as to what he REALLY was. Anyone know this one? |

According to the PHB, clerics don't actually need a god, they can just be clerics espousing ideals. You just pick two domains and represent them. Of course this may not fly with the DM so here are some other workable classes... As far as workable classes, he could be a favored soul of some god without even knowing it. There's gotta be some god of insanity out there somewhere that might fit and if not, talk to the DM about writing one up. That would let him cast divine spells enough that others might actually believe him to be a cleric. Similarly, an insane paladin will allow you do to fake clericly abilities. Additionally, it will be a bit out of the ordinary if you can figure out a code that a crazy person might be able to follow. And then there's the obvious...just make him a druid that thinks the rock is nature incarnate. |
| TheAnthroDM11-11-06, 02:20 PM | In dnd if you are insane you have low wisdom, and high charisma, so be a sorcerer! |
| Comrade11-11-06, 02:45 PM | I'd go with the favoured soul. :D A god will bless you with powers, but you could possibly think they are given to you by the rock. |
| HappyPants11-11-06, 03:25 PM | I like all these ideas a lot. What book would I find favored soul in? |
| dhamonra11-11-06, 08:20 PM | You'll find it in the Complete Divine. Have fun with this character, it sounds good already |
| Proteus41411-13-06, 07:08 AM | I agree. And if he/she has a few quirks (drinks a little too much at the wrong time dropping wisdom at key moments, etc.) it might be all the more interesting . . . . And depending on which level your game will start, a good, but odd magic item might enhance the overall effect. |
| Daxen11-15-06, 04:37 PM | Faith powers the gods, not the other way around. If he truely and fervently believes that the rock is a god, than it is, atleast to him. Depending on which way you want to go. The rock could be possesed by a creature, who grants power to this character to get done what it cannot in it's current state. Everyone thinks he is insane, but truely he is not. He is the chosen one who has been tasked with releasing an ancient god trapped milenia in this glowing rock. It goes with the afraid of the dark thing. It is up to the DM if it actually glows though, as it would be a minor magical item. As the character grows in power the trapped god gains more influence on the world, thus also gaining in magical ability. Something like the caster's staff as a familiar thing. Eventually if all goes well teh trapped god can be re-released into the world and said rock becomes the religions first artifact in ages. This could explain the reverse of the other poster with a High Wisdom and low Charisma. It is all really happening only you are teh only one who knows. To other's it looks like you are really just talking to a rock. Just my 2 cp, but what do I know. |
| leather_book_wizard11-15-06, 05:24 PM | Forget the rock,be a cleric of Banjo the Clown. |
