| Sergikins07-23-06, 09:46 AM | I personally think one of the greatest rewards of developing characters through roleplaying is to eventually give them a title. like for example, in the PHB2, Ember the monk becomes, Ember, the mistress of the four winds or something like that. I personally think its inaapropriate to give a title to a PC when he begins playing, but after you have played for a while (for me, it took nearly 12-15 sessions) to find the little niche your character occupies and name him for it. for example, my current Gray Elven Diviner (level 6 wizard if it matter to you guys at all, going into loremaster) has been self appointed the title "Tharvial, Weaver of Secrets, Master of None." and "The Grey Wanderer" (i think we have yet to encounter another grey elf the entire campaign, yet we are in a HEAVILY elf area (99% elf and orc mix)) so tell me about your characters? |
| Stormbrand07-23-06, 09:56 AM | The obvious one is a paladin who gets knighted. Unfortunately the DM never got round to detailing the characters in the world around them and so just let me pick a title appropriate for my level (18th). What I settled on was "Knight-Exalt High-Guard of the Watchwords." Anyway, I ended up writing some backstory for how he achieved the rank he did, and wrote the backstory for an 18th level character rather than the level I started the campaign as. I got carried away, and now am partway through writing a book. The trick with titles is to make them count for something. The main advantage from bearing a knighthood is that no one will try to tax you for bearing arms and armour or some such. |
| LordBOB77707-23-06, 02:59 PM | Lord BOB a Knight of Babel ( i was a Paladin ) I know about the "BOB" rule so dont start. I honestly dont remember why i was knighted but i was |
| Drunk_Yoda07-23-06, 09:16 PM | I am playing 2 charactes 1.- Sandskin, The protector: He's a Half-Giant duskblade NG who was named this after he destroyed an army of orcs/goblins/giants/hobgoblins, he was the last man standing after almost everyone was killed (only 10 of 100 men survived, counting my character). 2.- Gregor Pym, A.K.A. The Gentleman: He's a human Rouge/Swashbuckler who dresses him as a noble and gets into noble-girls bed, he sc**ws them and then steals from them anything he belives is worth any thing. He also brags about defeating many dragons and beeing a legend in the south but he hasn't faced a reasonable enemy ever. Got his tittle after the descriptions many of the girls gave, "He was a perfect gentleman". |

| Need_A_Life07-24-06, 09:00 AM | Official titles: Chief of the Shining Claw, Massawechs Blessed One, Sandshaper (see prestige class of the same name), Seeking One of First Degree. Titles taken for no other reason than to impress: Godslayer (well, I didn't actually deliver the killing blow, but I helped!), Protector of the Desert. I plan to add 'Living God'* to the official titles within 3 levels (god, I love prophecies). I looked at 1001 quirks and found one "Adds names as he gains power" and began making up titles. * A god given fleshly form. |
| Radijs07-24-06, 09:12 AM | Well I've got one who's simply a chieftain. Half-orc barbarian go figure. And I've got someone who's simply called Bart. He doesn't approve of fancy schmansy titles. |
| Cadfael_Gieddan07-25-06, 09:10 AM | Cadfael The Questionably Sane, Slayer Of Alpha Werewolves, Purveyor Of Cheap Parlor Tricks, M.D., P.h.D., Esq. As for the werewolf thing, it was down to 1 hp, but that didn't stop him from getting a swelled head about it. |
| Gneral Kass07-25-06, 10:07 PM | Pyli, my psionic warrior who was blinded back at lvl 6 and took a custom PrC made by our DM called the Swords of the Minds Eye, is known as The Ever-Seeing. She gained the title by holding off a flanking force of ogres, orcs, and trolls by herself while the rest of the party and a town's defensive force stayed off a main attack from the town's entrance. The custom PrC replaces sight with advanced telepathy to discern a foe's whereabouts and sense their actions. |
| TeediousPrime07-26-06, 11:51 AM | I have a half-elven half-gnomish character by the name of Elluine the Most High Exalted Priestess Holy Ruler. She's highly vain. As if you needed to be told. |
| Devlonir07-26-06, 12:04 PM | I still always like me my Boris "The Blade" (Guy Ritchie, you are my hero! *faints*) Dwarf Barbarian who only uses Blunt Weapons, because he lost a finger doing one of his bladetricks a few years back and since then distrusts sharp edges. (he doesnt even use a knife while eating anything.) |
| TeediousPrime07-26-06, 06:16 PM | (he doesnt even use a knife while eating anything.) What self-respecting barbarian uses utensils of any kind?! |
| Prak, the Mad07-27-06, 12:49 AM | you forgot to mention epethets from childhood/school/anything before the campaign basically. ie, I played a character(in Rifts) whose father was a demon and went through life being known as William the Bastard, William the Damned, etc. |
| ShiverTheBard07-27-06, 02:25 AM | Me and my friend are starting up at lvl 3 in a campaign and he already has a title. Jack the Knife, we calls him and it fits, he only uses a single knife. Me and him are both assasins and in the town were starting in, are decently infamous for taking out civilian targets. No monsters or nobles or anything like that yet. That's only till we hit lvl 8 or so. |
| JulesCARV07-27-06, 02:32 AM | Personally, the idea doesn't appeal to me. I just can't imagine taking my character seriously if he has a title. However, for an alternative idea, what about epithets that villains might spread about your party? Like, the fighter Edwin might be Mad Ed the Butcher to enemy parties. Shana the Sorcerer might be Demonspawn Sarah, etc. |
| Need_A_Life07-27-06, 02:21 PM | Personally, the idea doesn't appeal to me. Well, for a powermad mage (is that redundant?) giving oneself titles underlines that you're powerful and people who hear those titles are pretty sure to think twice before facing you. My current character has a nickname in the group and one outside, now which one of these sounds most terrifying: "Amhapar the cr**py magician" or "Amhapar Huridah, the Godslayer" BTW I made up the in-group nickname, the name just sounded too much like a poor magician for kids (picked it off a "typical names" list) |
| Fithero07-28-06, 05:33 AM | Olmas "The Occasional"... becuase he would occasionally remain conscious long enough in battle to do something usefull :P Later |
| Nived07-28-06, 12:27 PM | Like in my sig, my Cleric has made it a habbit of collectiving titles. Though I haven't updated that in awhile, he's now 14th level. Sir Tarn Dolstone the Pious, Reverend Son of Kijo the Blade, Protector of the Throne, Demon Slayer, Hero of Prophecy, Keeper of the Waters. And yes that's how he introduces himself, with one of the other party members usually muttering of *cough*adding*cough* Pig Bane. Tarn started play as "Reverend Tarn Dolstone" A cleric of Kijo the Blade, a LG war god. After stopping a civil war between two princes and finding the true heir to the throne (the prince's uncle who was suposed to be king instead of their father... Tarn really believes in Rule by Divine Right), and restoring peace to the kingdom (that he isn't even from). He was knighted and given the knightly title of "the Pious". So he became Sir Tarn Dolstone the Pious, Reverend Son of Kijo the Blade. Shortly there after he and the others in the party were given station as 'Protector's of the Throne' or royal errand boys... but he was damn proud of the title... so it was added on. The king, worried that the kingdom will fall into another civil war after he passes (as his nephews are still very bitter about being punked out of the throne), sends the Protectors of the Throne on a quest to fine these three mythical scrolls written centuries ago when the kingdom was founded, written by the first king of the land's oracle detailing the line of succession until the fall of the kingdom. These were hidden away because prophecy said if the line was ever broken... the land would tear itself apart. So off we went. Tarn weas able to cast divination at this point and used a Wild Boar as the required 'sacrifice'. We ended up using divination a lot and the phrase "I need a pig" was uttered by me quite often... as such my party started making the 'pig bane' joke. Battling through these locations the party defeated various elemental lords and imprisoned them in rings of elemental mastery, Tarn got water... luck of the draw, thus decided to call himself the 'Keeper of the Water'. Then the party started plane hopping, where two of the scrolls were suposedly hidden. We ended up in the abyss... which my LN cleric of a LG war god spared no time in slaying some freaking demons. So he is now 'Demon Slayer'. Lastly, when we returned from the land... seems the variable nature of time in the planes kept us away from the kingdom for 10 years. The king was dead, and his nephews had fled the country two years later at the onslaught of an invading army. There was only one city left standing and fighting, and that's where we went. Thus started the war campaign. To our surprise we weren't greeted as failures, our return proved the prophecy true and that the kingdom could be saved... we just needed to fight our way back to the capital to unlock the last scroll. Thus we were dubbed Heroes of Prophecy. Thus its Sir Tarn Dolstone the Pious, Reverend Son of Kijo the Blade, Protector of the Throne, Demon Slayer, Hero of Prophecy, Keeper of the Waters. *cough*pigbane*cough* And whenever his name is asked, whenever someone asks who he is... this is how he responds. None of the other characters use titles, one does go by the honorific of 'The Valient' which was his knightly title but that's more of a nickname. |
| Devlonir07-28-06, 05:26 PM | Also, i like to give titles to people when they achieve prestige classes for example: my current gnome conjurer, Theodore (Theo for friends) will soon become a loremaster, combining that with the fact that he has at least (and probably more then) 1 rank in every known knowledge, combined with the fact that he has the optional rule from phb 2 for specialized wizards that allows him, as a conjurer and therefore teleportation abuser, to teleport 10 foot as an emmediate action, he will soon become known as: "Theodore, the all-knowing Mage, Master of Teleportation." |
| Darkelfhunter08-05-06, 10:30 AM | The idea of "titling" one's PC is a fantastic idea. However, mainstream titles like, the Slayer, the Black, Protector of the Crown, and etc. are so cliche' most players shy away. In my own humble opinion, the game should create the title. For instance...my PC, a 3rd level Swashbuckler, ventured back to Waterdeep to "retrieve" two cutlasses which were being held at a small local thieving guild as collateral for gambling debts acrewed. Before proceeding to the guild hall, he stopped by for an ale, got involved in a game of chance, won a moderate sum of gp and a jeweled eye patch. Long story shortened...with some help from a hired mercenary who disguised himself, my PC (who was wearing his eye patch) was involved with an assassination of a high ranking official from the guild. And, guess who was seen exiting the guild hall?! That's correct, my PC, now known in Waterdeep, as Kale, the One-Eyed Assassin! |
| General_Ridley08-05-06, 11:21 AM | my favourite character I've worked out (haven't played ever), I call Muz, the Adjustable Archmage my current BBEG I'm creating is Descath, The Evolved, Skull King of Orcus |
| Volund_Starfire08-05-06, 02:48 PM | My level 15 Paladin's full title, as told to me by my GM, is as follows: Master Sir Volund Starfire, Baron of Arkness, Lord of Warkeep, Commodore of Virtue, and Wielder of Malwethiel When I was level 3, I became a knighted Paladin by the Church (Sir) When I was level 5, I aquired a Legacy Weapon (Wielder of Malwethiel) When I was level 7, I took the Leadership feat and gained a squire (Master) When I was level 9, I drove an evil out of the Warkeep stronghold and it was entrusted to me (Lord of Warkeep) When I was level 11, I was entrusted the land of Arkness around my stronghold by the King (Baron of Arkness) When I was level 13, I slew a pirate and took command of his ship, and two others at level 15 (Commodore of Virtue) |
| KoronBlackwing08-06-06, 03:17 PM | I have a Human Warmage that earned a title/nickname that is spoken always in elven. He earned his name when his group helped out a local lord in defending his lands from a arrogant warlord that thought he could seize the area for himself. Thankfully it became an simple matter of enlisting his old warmage academy which was nearby to come to the aid of the lord's forces as well as adding his own party to the mix. When the battle was over the DM stated that many of the elves of the local area and some from the academy stated that my character danced as death on the wind. Which the DM took the time to finda translation in the various books he had that gave examples of the elven language and so he was called Mai'Keth. It translates as (The wind of Death or Deathwind). Either way he will only speak the name in elven and introduces himself as Mai'Keth Jason Stormrage Warmage of the Sword Coast. |
| ericSHINRA08-07-06, 07:17 PM | This isnt really a title but because I never included any information regarding the sex-life and relationships of my LN Dwarf Fighter in his backstory the party and mainly our CN Sorcerer refered to him as 'The 100 Year Old Virgin'. Mind you our Sorcerer's first question when we met a female cleric(introduced in the first session and who turned out to be a Lycanthrope) was whether or not she was 'hot'. Also~ My current Neutral Good Human Fighter goes by 'Hawkeye' and his partner a True Neutral Half-Elf Duskblade goes by 'Tempest'. Not very creative but oh well... |
| Lyinginbedmon08-07-06, 10:30 PM | Let's see now, the present roster of player characters don't have any titles yet, but the founding characters that my original group (Me included) played had some good ones: King Beldar Hasselfeld - Human king, our primary tank, was assassinated after ascending to the throne. Well known among the group for refusing to die and still dealing masses of damage (Knight, kensai, legendary dreadnought, you name it). Not resurrected by party promise* Hammelekh Delvar Ironfist - Dwarf king, our primary meatshield, was crushed under a large section of a mountain whilst expanding subterranean caverns for his people. Known among the group as the pivotal defender of anyone who couldn't defend themselves, as well as the Ultimate Dwarf (Monk, Drunken Master, IT'S A DWARF!! :D ). Not resurrected by party promise* Saint Lordan Mightfist - Given status as a saint by every temple he ever visited, died of old age, so cannot be resurrected. Known for his prowess against undead, being able to quite literally walk through an entire legion of them without blinking an eye, after his burial no undead have ever survived coming within 30 ft. of his grave. "Slinker" Richard Gravely - The king of thieves, executed for several thousand acts of theft, a number of which were against royalty. Very powerful Rogue, able to door almost half a mile and stealing his executioner's coin purse post mortum (Which then started the Hallow's Eve tradition, go figure for a Ghost-Faced Killer :P ). Not resurrected by party promise* Archmage Morganth Stormcrow - Declared an Archmage due to expansive arcane ability, still alive to this day, and present head of the party's resulting guild. Known as the More-Than-Mage in the group, because he also worked to improve his melee damage whilst not damaging his spellcasting, and because if you get him down to low HP, he gets a pair of special blades from his arms that eviscerate darn near anything. *The night before Slinker's execution, the party (Being level 71 all around at the time) decided that they should just stop adventuring and go about their own businesses, that if any of them died after that day then they, by promise of all the surviving members, would not be resurrected and would be allowed to live out their afterlives. As such, none have been resurrected since their deaths. |
| Dathium08-08-06, 08:37 AM | Theres a couple I've seen that I liked... The first was "Sir Garfield of Odi", a second-edition Paladin. Liked animals, oddly enough. The next one I liked was one I actually gave out, to a Paladin; "Defender of Dealey". (Bit of a running joke in that campaign, one of the other DM's uses interesting names for his towns, so I tried to catch him up with naming a particular town Dealey, after he named the town over to the east of it "Grassy Knoll".) The title was given after the PC's learned that there was an invading army camping just a few days march to the south (over the other side of a mountain range) of Dealey, a small hamlet. The Paladin in question decided he'd incite the entire "able-bodied" population of Dealey into a Militia. It worked. Took him four days worth of motivational speaches and diplomacy checks, but he got the job done. Not only that, he personally led the charge against a trailbreaking company from the invaders army. A year later into the campaign, and Dealey is now populated by old men, women, children and second level Fighters. All of them. Not so much a great title, but the story behind it is one I enjoy ;) A couple of my own were alright, too. Alice, "The Princess". 7th level bard. Hated "Icky things" like spiders, undead critters and mud. Played the flute, if anyone catches the humor in that. But the title "The Princess", I enjoyed because it came from such a heavy over-exaduration of the dislike of ickyness. |
| Otogi08-08-06, 09:34 AM | I had three characters that seemed to have gotten titles: Reaton of Metal Heritics, a warforged warlock of Pale Night who used to be in an (imaginary) group of warforged filled with filled with him and 3 other classes that seem heretical (Dread Necromancer, Cleric of Neruell and Binder) Zuhari of Hidden Crystals, a githzeri lurk who once robbed a whole psionic sacntum a fashioned shirt made of crystals. Rhea'ton, Grim Water Acrotyle, a kiloren shugenja who temporarily fused with a Water Monolith to distroy half the Water Nodes of the world. |
| Hobo_sapiens08-08-06, 11:53 AM | I was watching O Brother Where Art Thou last night when an idea occurred to me. Why not a character with a nickname/"title" he doesn't like? Sort of like George "Babyface" Nelson. The character becomes widely known for a trait or a deed that he's less than proud of, and when people make reference to it by using a certain nickname, he gets very upset. Just a thought. |
| DarkLiChNeaZur08-08-06, 03:54 PM | titles rock, usually i grant them when a character reaches level 20, or if they preform a great feat or courage, honor, cruelty, and the sort before that. my lvl 38 assasin got the title Shadowstalker and later Deathbringer his latest title was " The dark Whisper" and at level 40 i get either Master assasin, or executioner but in my games usually titles give benefits, such as Mark the Exalted got a -5 to his taint level and later on he became Mark the Justicator and was granted the Justicators blade atk bonus +5(without bATK bonus or str modifier) and 1d12 + 5 dmg and he got -30 to taint with Deathbringer i got a permanent +1 to my sneak attack rolls and with The Dark whisper i got Cloak of the Dark Whisper, +15 to a move silently check (really aint that much at lvl 38) master assasin will give me some new chainmail that counts as light armor, and also boosts my hide check, sall good stuff. |
| Darkheyr08-09-06, 10:21 AM | I have a sorceress who is known to many only as "The Silverflame", for a rather spectacular slaying of a larger orc warband involving lots, lots and LOTS of lightning bolts / scintillating spheres and other electricity spells. Her father - a thayvian wizard who more or less sold her into slavery - also likes to call her "that cursed bastard child I should have slain when I had the chance" whenever she blows up one of his servants and / or whatever business venture associated with him. But then, Im not sure if that counts as a title... |
| crimson_aneurysm08-10-06, 04:57 PM | In my old gaming group, my half-demon rogue/shadowdancer was informally nicknamed "The Soul-Wh*re," for the frequency with which he got charmed by enemies. |
| Xukko_The_Unholy08-11-06, 04:40 AM | I never had the honor, nor priviledge of having a Sir name to any of my characters. Though, my brother and our fellow gamers have spoken many of times of my brother's half orc barbarian character - a.k.a Krail, Slayer of Plea. It all began when Krail, my brother, along with his companions (I was not gaming with them, at this certain time) all came into a town seeking a nice warm bed, and good meal. When one of the other players turned on a villager and killed him from an arguement that went downhill (He does this a lot... Though, he still claims to be Chaotic Good...) Then, every villager began to arm themselves and attack. With Krail's greater cleave and +3 Greatersword.. well, you can fill in the rest. When it all came to pass, only Krail was left and the campaign had to end. The name of this town was Plea. |
| Kairn8308-20-06, 04:04 PM | Current Knight 3/Cleric 4 of Helm managed to pick up a rank, not so much a title . At the moment he's a militant chaplain, so a battle cleric - official title is 'Brother-Captain'. Has been 'gifted' a small retinue by his church that he can call upon for assistance when needed, hence the 'Captain' title. |
| PiedmonSama08-20-06, 05:51 PM | Hmm.... I'm struggling to recall, but out of the many D&D characters I've rolled up few have ever had such "titles." Well, that's not quite true---in several campaign worlds I made, Elves and Orcs had the tradition of using a self-appointed title rather than a familial surname. I felt that was much more inkeeping with chaotic, individualist societies. Thus "Aydnon the Morningleaf" and "Snargog the Blackblade" could be the names of an Elf baker or an Orc brewer. The kind of titles you're talking about, though, the ones used as "rewards..." well, I don't think I've ever done something like that. My characters rarely live to see past 5th level, unfortunately, so it's not like they ever get to do anything that notorious.... on the other hand, the few high-level characters I've played typically had official ranks rather than pro-wrestler-esque titles. For example, my Paladin (later Blackguard and Death Knight) Vanick was called "the High Templar" because that was his rank as General of his kingdom's armies. |
| Monsco08-26-06, 03:03 PM | It may seem a cliche, but ive got a Half-orc Barbarian called "the cursed one" Everyone, in the world knows and hates him, dispite the fact hes not evil. sad fact is, hes the worlds (well, in my dms world) One and only half orc half Dwarf! How this happened is long and unnessisary, but everyone hates him. Hes constintly like :weep:'ing and stuff. |
