Hey people, ive got an npc that im needing a bit of help with, he is a Gnome (wizard or sorcerer, not sure yet) who brews potions for a living (gonna take as many levels in Master Alchemist as possible) This little guy is out in the woods, and he just brews potions all the time.

Thing is though, this wizard has found this gnome (who i might add, is slightly out of it, you could have a marching band behind him and he wouldnt noticed, hes that engrosed in his works) and has decided to use him. Basically he has taken this gnomes property and lowered it underground (keeping it intact) and built a dungeon around it. The wizard himself isnt actually evil, (LN actually) but he is using the gnome, who hasnt noticed the great dirt walls surrounding his own home.

Anyway, i just need a reason for this little guy to be making potions. Either he's mad and thinks there is a conflict comming and is preparing, or perhaps he is a follower of some gnome god and is just making potions for his gods followers.

I dunno, thats what i need help with. Also, are their any feats (normal or exalted, not vile) that would allow him to offset the exp cost somewhat for creating so many potions all the time? Since he will be making like 4 a day... at very high levels, he's gonna be wracking up a pretty high bill.

(If your still having trouble picturing this guy, think of the Key Maker out of the Matrix, locked down in that dungeon, making keys all the time.)

Chiers in advance.

A way to solve the problem is to give him the artificer class. They get points to make items each level.. not sure what to do after that though..

Oh.. and id go for the mad thing, meeting a mad gnome npc is always fun for the group.

i like the mad idea and i've decided to expand it a little bit. perhaps this gnome is "madly" obbsessed with potions the way a mage who locks himself in a tower to be with his magic is. he loves alchemy and seeks to expand his knowlege on the subject.

*adventure idea*
this "mad" gnome could therefore, after being discovered by the pc's, ask them to retrieve a rare ingredient for him. he fails to mention the large monster tht guards the area where this ingredent grows.

just my spin on it

The mad yet helpfull gnome wizard is just so clique... done a dozen times before... i want my gnome to be totally mad and totally evil :P

Hes going to have a whole dungeon complex set up where he will siffon liquid pain from kidnapped victums. He will then use the agony (liquid pain) as components in his potions.

Evil gnomes... hehe... i just cant take them seriously.

Any thoughts?

He could just be looking for the 'perfect mix.' Like a master baker perfecting his cakes or a D&D player constantly going through every book trying to built the ultimate character. Not insane, just really into his hobby.
There's an Eboron feat, Master Crafter. Reduces crafting cost by 25%.

I remember that in Races of Stone, gnomes are considered to be beings that view magic as an artform, an idea that lingers in all their tasks. I could easily imagine a slightly mad little man who cared nothing about what passed around him, so long as he could continue creating what he wished, watching perfection in his own eyes, in the form of his potions, come to life.

*laugh* He could even be a low-wisdom primadonna about his craft, easily flattered and proud of his abilities. Someone who could be bluffed or charmed quite simply, just by playing on his pride.

Or have him very specificly forgetful.

"Hmm a fine potion of Bull Strength if I ever saw one. Into the cubbord here and time for tea."

Drinks tea, time passes.

"Well lets check the cubbard and se what I am low on. Oh looks like I am out of Bull Strength, better brew up a batch."

Have the "villan" install a trapdoor to the NPC's store room that allows for easy removal of finished product and the replenisment of raw materials. Or have an invisible servant follow the NPC and alter his records on how many potions he has completed. The NPC is dedicated enough that he will keep trying to push that metaphorical boulder up the hill. Regardless of how many times it rolls down again.
