I am joining up in an evil campaign and I have decided to play either a LE Wizard or an LE Cleric of Hextor.

But my big hang over to getting into character is I don't know what kind of goal(s) a LE character might be trying to achive. Gaining power yes, but why would he or she want to gain power.

So if everyone on this good board would be kind enough to post some general ideas of goals that a lawful evil character might be after and why they would be after them. And when I mean general I mean don't make it world specific like Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk.

Well if you do make the cleric of Hextor you would want to gain power in order to raise an army to kill followers of Heironeous.

Some people want power for the sake of power or so that they can use the power to create a comfortable life for themself

Those are my meager suggestions

One good thing to think about is whether your character is a leader or a follower. LE leaders want power, and seek to put themselves in a position of command (being evil, they'll bully, murder, lie and cheat their way there, as well). If he's wise, he'll have a goal he can realistically achieve (command of an army, church, wizard's tower, etc.), or he could be overconfident, and reach for a far-fetched goal.
A LE follower believes in a cause (Hextor's probably in this case), but is willing to act as a soldier rather than as a general. He lacks the leader's drive and ambition, but isn't taking as much of a risk.

Anyways, just my two copper pieces, hope I helped.
