| Master_Vega03-09-08, 08:55 PM | I might post this in the Campaign Building board later as a freebie story, since I don't typically run campaigns where this sort of thing would work. Hope you all enjoy! "Once, so long ago," the old storyteller began, "when numberous deities or demons, whose names have been forgotten, crowded the pantheon and combated over the souls of all lands much as the Great Deities do now, there was a foundling child raised by a small deity named Nyrth; the little god christened the child Torell. A naturally charismatic and brave soul, his love for his foster father brought him to preach to many of his existence and merits. He quested to gain the peoples' faith, becoming the first paladin of the weak deity as he smote demon after demon to prove the power of Nyrth. "But the people only saw Torell's strength, not that of the god he claimed to represent, and gave him their praise. The harder he fought, the more the villages and cities believed him capable of. For years he battled, gained strength and drew followers. He became a beacon for all good people struggling to fight off the demons and devils that plagued the land in that day... but what the naive paladin did not notice was that, while he prayed to Nyrth, the people prayed to him. Because of the deeds he performed in the name of his deity, he ascended to demigodhood before he was twenty-nine years of age, and then to godhood over the course of centuries." "As his influence grew, his patron's wained. The few followers that his foster father had grown old, and the popularity of Torell drew their children away from Nyrth. Only seventy-years into Torell's life, Nyrth descended from godhood and, shortly after that, became mortal. Ashamed, he fled all followers of Torell, and Torell himself; he could not face his adopted son as a finite being." "Nyrth died of earthly afflictions years later, and Torell was never told until long after the former-god's passing. He did not believe it, could not believe it. He contested that, if Nyrth had indeed died, where did his power come from? The people did not know; few know the workings of deities and demons... Shortly after this dispute, now aware of the deity's absence, Torell set out to find his father... and so he has been ever since, the paladin that surpassed and replaced his god, will never acknowledge it, and may never see what he as become." Korell is a very odd god, zealous and insightful, though very naive. He travels the world and the divine realms searching for his patron, but never forgets his people. He prays to Nyrth in the morning, which is consequently when his followers pray for their spells. When faced with true evil, he will destroy it without a second thought; he will care for and nourish good wherever he can find it, and will try to convert the undecided to Nyrth's cause. Alignment: Lawful Good Divine Rank: ??? (It depends on your campaign.) Domains: Torell's clerics receive their domain spells from the Good, Strength, and Trickery domains. Torell is strong and good, but the irony that follows him is very sly and evasive of his awareness. His first clerics followed him for his warrior traits, but lately his irony has become a useful attribute to his followers. Note: Though Nyrth has indeed passed on, he is honored in prayers to Torell as the father of the deity. This honoring is not enough to return a divine rank to Nyrth, or at least it is not yet enough. Any ideas for stories, depictions, legends, personality... anything? I hope you guys enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it! |
| JulesCARV03-14-08, 12:28 AM | Just one mechanical nitpick: he's a paladin, but is neutral good. If you're going by the normal rules, he must either be a fallen ex-paladin or be lawful good. Perhaps instead, he could be a cleric? Or, if you want him to be a bit more combattive, maybe a multiclassed crusader/cleric or fighter/cleric? (I'd suggest the mujahid (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=995266) as a prestige class, but that's just my ego talking.) The story, though is pretty amusing. Good stuff. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose03-14-08, 03:54 AM | I'd imagine Nyrth would make for a very good vestige (ToM). A very interesting god. Patron of the lost, leaders, sons, and all adopted children in general. |
| Master_Vega03-14-08, 12:08 PM | JulesCARV -- Heh, I didn't catch that. I suppose he's lawful good, then. I'm running on 2.5 hours of sleep right now, so I don't remember why he was NG (which means I might have to change it back if I remember something important. :P) Mujahid does seem like a fitting class for him, simply because of how devoted he is to Nyrth. Thanks for the suggestion and critique. It's good to hear the story was enjoyable. Terjon -- I'll have to look that mechanic (vestiges) up later on this morning. I had fun writing this, and thought you guys would appreciate me posting it here. |
| JulesCARV03-14-08, 02:00 PM | Well, if he's going to be LG, then there's no real need to get into all of the alternatives I talked about (like the mujahid) instead of being a paladin, since he can just be a paladin in accordance with the initial plan :). |
| Master_Vega03-15-08, 01:52 AM | Point taken. Terjon -- I just looked the vestiges up (well, what I could find online, anyway). I'd say Nyrth would grant some kind of ability to draw attention away from one creature, and focus it on another. Just a thought. |
