It's a Reaper Mini, people. And it's looking for a back-story.

Beautiful.
So, I'm looking at this guy, and I see some things:
1) The sword is a b-sword, right? Bit too long for a longsword. The hilt and guard are crafted in the image of a phoenix, or some other such bird.
2) Looking at his shield (obviously heavy steel), the image of a phoenix is emblazoned on it...or some other such bird...
3) The helmet seems to have some kind of point in the front, protruding from the eyes, and his hair comes out of the back in a ponytail. This is reminiscent of a phoenix's beak and plume.
4) His boots have three bird-like metal claws affixed to the toes.

His equipment looks to be in fair state, if not new, with the exception of his tattered cape. This guy looks to be more of a paladin of some phoenix-god than a mercenary warrior. This brings me to my point:
Is there some sort of material out there to support my take on this guy? A phoenix-god, for instance, would be great. I would love some tips and suggestions on what to do for him.

My original idea was some sort of distant, anti-social knight in dark blues and grays that was actually a Knight of Nature (servant of Ehlonna), protecting forests or something. Then I started thinking about Obad-Hai. He accepts you regardless of alignment, so I might have been able to make him into an evil character who is absolutely obsessed with protecting nature, prompting him to kill 'evil-doers' without mercy or proof of intent. Certainly would have been interesting to have the PCs forced to team up with the guy for something.

But now that I've taken a closer look, I can't refuse the bird imagery. At this point I want one of two things: either a golden-brown/gold/red/orange Phoenician Knight, or I'll go with the dark blues and grays and make the over-the-top avian imagery more symbolic and metaphoric.

Suggestions?

In a generic D&D campaign, there's nothing that really speaks Phoenix.

Personally, you have a cool mini that can work well with the Nature's Knight concept. There are plenty of birds or prey that you can attach to the character: Eagles, Falcons, or Hawks. The imagery can represent a noble and vigilant nature-based warrior obsessed with protecting nature (i believe the word is territorial). But, that doesn't fit in with the mercenary concept.

I personally wouldn't do the killing without proof. That seems to be more inept evil then anything else.

Maybe he attacks ANYONE who he sees threatening nature, regardless of how little the crime is. And then if he can track to the family home, light the house on fire. That should send the message of not to mess with nature quite well. But if he kills anyone he suspects, he runs the risk of confusing people and they won't understand that this person was killed for his infractions against nature. Much easier to only kill the guilty then to have to explain things over and over.

And not just is he a druid-y guy, but the hawk/eagle might represent his clan or order. I can't give you anything to support this, other then the fact that druids sometimes form circles and this one might just have some imagery associated with them thanks to prolonged civlized contact or an order of non-druid nature protectors.

He could be lawful and only kill those who dare to defy nature's laws, and leaves those who don't alone. (But he would need proof, most likely, or he might get in danger of violating his code). If you want to work with PC's, he might even help those who help nature while killing/torturing those who harm nature. An avenger who goes waaaaaay too far.

Either would work for an evil druid or Crusader(It looks a bit plate-y).

I'm afraid that I don't know Greyhawk, but think FR has a fire god that would accept evil followers, and has a thing of purification through fire. Makes sense that a phoenix would be used for Kossuth. FR also has Malar, god of bloodlust, savagry and beasts, which an eagle certainly is.
