Born in the town of Silverdale 34 years ago Wilros Chandler was always one of the more adventurous of the boys. As a young boy Wil loved to play adventurer. Whether it was sneaking through the nearby forest or fighting pretend Orcs with his trusty stick-sword. The thing that Wil liked most in life was to hear the stories told by adventurers. Sometimes if he was especially lucky the adventurers would have a bard traveling with them and then the stories would really come to life for Wil.
One day a small group of adventurers came through Silverdale. At first Wil was really excited to hear the stories of their journeys, but Wil soon found that no matter how well you handle a sword or how powerful a wizard you are there are still emotions. The emotions that these adventurers shown at least as far a Wil could tell were fear. This did not sit right with Wil; these adventurers had saved the kingdom of Alvion, so why were they so scared? Wil had to find out. Not realizing the danger he put himself in he followed the group out of Silverdale and into the forest. But this time they went in much deeper into the forest than even Wil had ever dared go in. They soon came to a clearing, in the middle of the clearing was a large rock alter and beside the alter was the most wicked looking man Wil had ever seen.
Hiding behind a group of trees Wil watched as the party encountered the man. Even though there were four of them and only one of him he seemed to be evenly matched with them, no slightly stronger. The battle raged on for what seemed like an eternity. As the battle hit its climax the wicked man scurried towards the alter, ran a silver blade across his hand and as his blood hit the alter he shouted several vile words that made Wil's hair stand on end. Just as the man finished the last syllable there was an eerie silence. When suddenly an orange oval portal suddenly appeared as if is ripping through this dimension.
Twenty-four years later Wil wakes up once again from this reoccurring nightmare. Sitting upright he glances around the room. His bright green eyes glowing slightly in the dark, he swings his legs over the edge of his bed. Reaching for his blindfold and wrapping it over his eyes. “I think it’s time I move on” He says to himself. “Such is the life of a beggar.” Today Wilros Chandler is just a simple beggar moving from town to town. Weither it is because of rumours that he is a doomwatcher or the fact that he IS a doomwatcher who lives in constant fear of the beings that lurk inside the portal the wicked man opened so many years ago.

that's really pretty cool. good concept, and very well-written and original. i'm curious as to what race/class, human monk?

Pretty good. But 24 years gap between the portal opening and the present is not good for suspense [whatever's in that portal would have made it's presence already]
Maybe 5 or 6 years would be better

i'd disagree, i think it adds more suspense because we DON'T know explicitly what happened. furthermore, it doesn't particularly matter what else happened with that portal, because the beauty of a character background is that the author can do whatever he wants with it, so long as the DM accepts it.

and this, in my opinion, is a quality background. it gives the DM alot to work with as far as pre-existing conflict goes, as well as the ability to work the character's past into the campaign (should he choose to do so).

In the new campaign that this guy will be introduced into the party will be all starting as commoners. Wil is a human and I will probabally have him go either monk/AoP or Cleric/AoP
