Hi everyone,
I'm a relatively new poster to the Character Dev. boards. I'm looking for some role playing and background suggestions for a character I'm making.

My group is starting a new game, and it's up to me to make the arcane caster. The setting is the Savage Tides adventure path, which has a water/aquatic based setting. Almost everyone else in my group is making a human, and my last few characters have been dwarves. So, I thought that I would try an elf again after many years. The Gray elf looked like a good wizard race; +2 Int, elven wizard substitution level, and general elven "coolness". However, I got to looking into gray elven background and found that they typically live in high mountains, are rather seclusive, and they are very haughty/arrogant. For more weirdness, I am seriously considering giving him the "amphibious" template from Stormwrack.

I don't want to have a character that will totally tick off the rest of the group. Does anyone have suggestions for good role playing as an elf (i.e. not just a human with pointy ears), and/or a haughty noble (i.e. somewhat snobby, but not a total jerk all of the time)??

Here is an idea I have for a background...
My character's family home was on mountain cliffs near the sea. As a young woman, his great great grandmother was sailing to the fledgling town of Sasserine (which is where our adventure will begin). As she neared the ports, her ship was wrecked in a sudden storm. She was rescued by a handsome sea elf (or unknowingly Deep Sashelas himself??). Despite the gray elven "disdain" for other races, even of other elves, it was love at first sight. Over the years, she returned to the spot, to spend time with the sea elf. Knowing that their love could never be, they shared one union with each other. That union resulted in twin boys; one that must breath water and the other air. Although my great grandfather was not a pure gray elf, he continued my gray elven line. Since then, random members of my family have been drawn to the sea, and some even possess the ability to breath water and air.

Any comments and constructive critcisms would be appreciated.

So, your a grey elf with the Amphibious template?

I would steer clear of combat if i were you, -2 con & -2 dex doesnt exactly scream "I will survive" to me :P

As for your background, where did you actually live? On the cliffs above the ocean (in a small cottage, a town or large city) or in an underwater city?

Are you actually nobility (or even royality) or just a haunty grey elf?

How do others view your mixed heritage and strange abilities?

If you want to be haunty, perhaps you can complain (or just comment) about the conditions your forced to endure, or how poor the food/service is. Become offended (not outraged, more of a sulk) when people make a slight against you (ie: havent heard of your city/family line). Always opt to sleep in the best rooms and eat and drink the best food and drink, no matter the cost.

That help?

Thanks Fithero. Yeah, some of that is helpful. Sorry if I was a bit vague on some details. As to your questions...

I am only considering the Amphibious template. The -2 Dex does hurt, but it seemed like interesting flavor. However, I do plan on trying to avoid melee as best I can.

I envisioned living in an elven town (probably not a large city) on cliffs above the ocean.

Yes, my character actually is a noble. Not necessarily a prince or duke or anything, but nobility. The haughtiness came mainly from my reading a general description of gray elves. I know I don't need to play it that way, but I wanted to see how others might interpret gray elven "arrogance".

I'm not sure how others might respond. Depending on how our GM plays it, I can see other gray elves not reacting well to it. I actually considered keeping it a secret in game (surely to come out in an adventure).

Thanks again for your input.
