Trying to get back into D&D after like 12 years. Read somewhere about the Gutter Mage, and also looking into Multi-Classing, was wondering what woule be better, trying to create/find a Gutter Mage class or Multi-Class Wizard/Rogue.

I have an idea for a Halfling "Gutter Mage" who lives on the streets and has enough magic skill to heighten his rogue skills and make living on the streets easier. Using spells such as Alarm, Hold Portal,Mount, Expeditious Retreat and Feather Fall (all Wiz/Sor) to make life easier and Purify Food and Drink (Clr/Drd) so he can eat.

But looking back, some of the spells that would be good for a Gutter Mage are not available for the wizard class. Again being a newbie again im not firmilliar with all of the rules yet lol. any ideas or suggestions would be great :-)

Hmm...the spellthief could probably do the trick: it's from Complete Adventurer. I don't know about the spell-list, bard might have the spells you're looking for.

It sounds like you're looking for some unusual combo of Arcane trickster/Mystic Theurge. IMO, a gutter mage would still steal what he needed, but might use magic to get there.

Another good street-mage class is the beguiler from the PHII.
